Engineering compact Physalis peruviana (goldenberry) to promote its potential as a global crop

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Goldenberry (Physalis peruviana) produces sweet, nutritionally rich berries, yet like many minor crops, is cultivated in limited geographical regions and has not been a focus of breeding programs for trait enhancement. Leveraging knowledge of plant architecture‐related traits from related species, we used CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated gene editing to generate a

Transcriptomic stress responses in Vaccinium spp. F1 hybrids: Implications for temperature‐resilient cranberry breeding using a crop wild relative

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate extremes threaten the sustainability of cranberry production, a culturally and economically important North American crop. This study demonstrates that wild cranberries (Vaccinium oxycoccos) harbor genetic variation that may enhance cold stress resilience when introduced into cultivated cranberry through hybridization.

Optimization of Hydrothermodynamic Technology for Blueberry Food Processing

open access: yes, 2011
Traditional processing technologies can negatively affect polyphenolics of blueberry products. Optimization of hydrothermodynamic (HTD) processing has been used to minimize blueberry-based product quality degradation.

Harnessing the nutritional potential of Cape wild edible plants: Insights, gaps and priorities

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Wild edible plants hold significant potential to strengthen food systems by enhancing nutrition, dietary diversity, climate resilience, sustainability and deeper connection of people to their food. In this study, we conducted a systematic literature review to identify knowledge gaps and assess the nutritional contributions of selected wild edible ...

Preclinical Evaluation of Berry Extracts as a Nutritional Intervention to Alleviate Myocardial Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury and Atherosclerosis Development

open access: yesPhytotherapy Research, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of the experimental design and the proposed mechanisms underlying the cardioprotective and anti‐atherosclerotic effects of Greek‐derived berry extracts. C57BL/6 mice with WD–induced MS and ApoE−/− mice with atherosclerosis received chronic supplementation with WMex or BBex.

Invisible near‐infrared thermo‐stimulated luminescence from carbon dots enabled by stepwise energy transfer for concealed information encryption

open access: yesResponsive Materials, EarlyView.
A fully metal‐free near‐infrared (NIR) thermo‐stimulated luminescent system is developed by embedding carbon dots into a carbon nitride matrix and integrating multistage Förster resonance energy transfer. The system exhibits long‐term charge retention, rewritable optical memory, and highly concealed NIR readout, promising for secure data encryption and

Weed Management Options for Organic Wild Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) Production

open access: yes, 2012
Weeds are considered a major problem for organic wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) production due to their excessive growth and limited management options available. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to investigate burning in
