Protein-carbohydrate interactions during fertilization [PDF]
Interaction between gametes during fertilization is at least in part regulated by carbohydrate moieties of the zona pellucida (ZP) and carbohydrate binding proteins of the sperm surface. This review focuses on the protein-carbohydrate interactions during

Boar and season effects on some parameters of semen fertilizing potential [PDF]
In order to determine the more accurate fertile potential of sperm, it seems that the conventional parameters of boar semen quality (the ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, progressive motility, percentage of live sperm and of those with ...

Assessment of quality in specific fractions of Large White Yorkshire boar semen [PDF]
Boar semen is voluminous and ejaculated as jets or fractions of pre-sperm, sperm rich (SRF) and post-sperm rich fractions. Recent studies have reported more resilient characteristics of sperm in initial portions of SRF towards cold shock and ...

Selection of Boar Sperm by Reproductive Biofluids as Chemoattractants [PDF]
Chemotaxis is a spermatozoa guidance mechanism demonstrated in vitro in several mammalian species including porcine. This work focused on follicular fluid (FF), periovulatory oviductal fluid (pOF), the medium surrounding oocytes during in vitro maturation (conditioned medium; CM), progesterone (P4), and the combination of those biofluids (Σ) as ...

Ameliorative Effect of Chitosan Complex on Miniature Pig Sperm Cryopreservation
Cryopreservation is mainly used for preservation of boar sperm. However, this method stresses the sperm by reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the conception rate and the litter size are not more efficient than the liquid preservation of spermatozoa ...

During cold storage, boar spermatozoa undergo oxidative stress, which can impair sperm function and fertilizing capacity. The objective of the present study was to assess the effects of Schisandrin B (Sch B) in semen extenders on the quality of boar ...

Protein kinase C activity in boar sperm [PDF]
SummaryMale germ cells undergo different processes within the female reproductive tract to successfully fertilize the oocyte. These processes are triggered by different extracellular stimuli leading to activation of protein phosphorylation. Protein kinase C (PKC) is a key regulatory enzyme in signal transduction mechanisms involved in many cellular ...

Background Cryopreservation is an efficient way to store spermatozoa and is closely associated with the quality of sperm after the freeze-thaw process. During freeze-thaw cycling, excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced, and the effects of ...

Effect of temperature on the fluidity of boar sperm membranes [PDF]
Summary. Fluidity was used to assess changes in molecular organization of boar spermatozoa plasma membranes from (1) the head and (2) the rest of the sperm body and acrosome as a consequence of temperature. The initial fluidity of the head membranes at 25°C was less than that of the sperm body membranes (P < 0·05).
