Examination of the bone marrow
British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2008An abnormal full blood count is a common finding in many different medical conditions; however, the cause may often not be immediately apparent. The history and examination of the patient, together with other tests such as the blood film, may help towards the diagnosis.

Bone marrow transplantations have a definite role in treatment of leukemias and lymphomas. In acute myeloid leukemia and CML an allogeneic transplant using an HLA identical donor certainly provides a far superior survival than chemotherapy. Patients with Ph' chromosome need to be transplanted in first remission if a suitable donor is available.

A 64-year-old woman was admitted with a high fever and generalized bone pain. There was systemic lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory examination showed pancytopenia and high levels of lactate dehydrogenase (13 087 U/l) and alkaline phosphatase (1576 U/l).

The Bone Marrow in Schizophrenia
Archives of General Psychiatry, 1964The purpose of this paper is (1) to present additional hematological abnormalities seen in studies of bone marrow of schizophrenic patients; (2) to give evidence for the genealogy of the abnormal cells which have been described in the peripheral blood of schizophrenic patients1; and (3) to suggest that these abnormal cells may be related to the ...

Some severe auto-immune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, require immunosuppression to save life or vital organ function. One major limiting factor in such immunosuppression is the unwanted and dangerous haematoablation occurring at the same time.

A bone marrow edema pattern on MRI has a similar signal quality as an inflamed synovium and may, in fact, reflect true inflammatory infiltrates rather than a pure accumulation of extracellular fluid. Bone lesions near sites of rheumatoid arthritis–related inflammation are heavily vascularized, contributing to the high water content and enhanced ...

No narcosis for bone marrow harvest in autologous bone marrow transplantation
Blut, 1984A prospective study with mild general analgesia and sedation together with local anesthesia during bone marrow harvest was performed. Thirty-one patients underwent 33 bone marrow collections. Pretreatment consisted of 100 mg meperidine i.m. and 20 mg diazepam i.m. 1 h before start of procedure.

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is undertaken in a heroic attempt to increase the cute rate in malignancy and to treat deadly metabollic disorders. After ablative therapy, patients are transfused with their own or with HLA matched or haploidentical bone marrow. The inoculum cells or mature T cells which cause graft versus host disease.

Bone marrow is the essential for function of hematopoiesis, which is vital for the normal functioning of the body. Bone marrow disorders or dysfunctions may be evaluated by blood workup, peripheral smears, marrow biopsy, plain radiographs, computed tomography (CT), MRI and nuclear medicine scan.
