The Bone Marrow in Brucellosis
American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1954For many years it has been known that Brucella invades the bone marrow and produces granulomatous lesions. The marrow, however, has been studied by only a few workers with regard to the bacteriologic and histopathologic diagnosis of brucellosis. An observation 50 years ago — rescue of mice from lethal irradiation by shielding the spleen — rapidly led to the clinical use of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). It was observed that reconstitution of the bone marrow took place from cells that could be found in the non-irradiated spleen.
