Insight into the Internal Structure of Biogenic, Synthetic and Geological Apatite by Electron Microscopy and X‐Ray Scattering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Apatite occurs in many forms in nature, e.g. in teeth and geological minerals. Internally, biological apatite contains nanocrystals that are also found in synthetically prepared calcium phosphate nanoparticles which are used in biomedicine, e.g. for gene and drug delivery and for bone regeneration. Abstract Calcium phosphate is the inorganic component (

LOW BONE MINERAL DENSITY IN BRAZILIAN PATIENTS AT DIAGNOSIS OF CELIAC DISEASE

open access: yesArquivos de Gastroenterologia, 2015
BackgroundLow bone mineral density is considered an extra-intestinal manifestation of celiac disease with reduced bone mass, increased bone fragility, and risk of fractures. Celiac disease is considered a condition at high risk for secondary osteoporosis

Microplastics from Wearable Bioelectronic Devices: Sources, Risks, and Sustainable Solutions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioelectronic devices (e.g., e‐skins) heavily rely on polymers that at the end of their life cycle will generate microplastics. For research, a holistic approach to viewing the full impact of such devices cannot be overlooked. The potential for devices as sources for microplastics is raised, with mitigation strategies surrounding polysaccharide and ...

Heritable and nutritional influences on bone mineral mass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Osteoporosis is the net result of the maximal amount of bone mineral mass achieved by the end of pubertal growth (peak bone mass) minus post-menopausal and elderly bone losses.

Bone: An Acute Buffer of Plasma Sodium during Exhaustive Exercise?

open access: yes, 2013
Both hyponatremia and osteopenia separately have been well documented in endurance athletes. Although bone has been shown to act as a “sodium reservoir” to buffer severe plasma sodium derangements in animals, recent data have suggested a similar function

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, multiple myeloma, and osteoporosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The finding of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is not infrequent during an evaluation for osteoporosis or a fracture. In most cases, the diagnosis is MGUS, whose prevalence increases with age. Although the impact of MGUS on bone

Introducing Pure Calcium Orthophosphate Gels and Aerogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis of calcium phosphate‐based gels and aerogels is reported, which exhibit highly porous structures built up of networks of nanoparticles. In case of amorphous aerogels, this leads to yet unmatched specific BET surface areas, making these materials especially interesting for biomedical applications.

Causal relationship between bone mineral density and intervertebral disc degeneration: a univariate and multivariable mendelian randomization study

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders
Background Although previous studies have suggested a possible association between bone mineral density (BMD) and intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), the causal relationship between them remains unclear.
