Using Three-Dimensional Computational Modeling to Compare the Geometrical Fitness of Two Kinds of Proximal Femoral Intramedullary Nail for Chinese Femur

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2013
Objective. The aim of this study was to use three-dimensional (3D) computational modeling to compare the geometric fitness of these two kinds of proximal femoral intramedullary nails in the Chinese femurs. Computed tomography (CT) scans of a total of 120

Long-term stability of angle-stable versus conventional locked intramedullary nails in distal tibia fractures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background: In the last years intramedullary nailing has become the treatment of choice for most displaced diaphyseal tibia fractures. In contrast intramedullary nailing of distal tibia fractures is accompanied by problems like decreased biomechanical ...

Disruption of Sulfur Metabolism and Redox Homeostasis in Staphylococcus aureus Using Mechanically Robust Antibiofilm Ti‐Bi Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Titanium (Ti) and bismuth (Bi) are selected as alloying elements for the preparation of the Ti‐Bi binary alloy system. Biofilm formation is found to be inhibited by bismuth through the disruption of sulfur metabolism and redox homeostasis, as well as through the direct downregulation of biofilm‐associated proteins.

Pagans and Christians at the frontier: Viking burial in the Danelaw [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
[FIRST PARAGRAPH] The Vikings are the victims of cultural stereotyping (see e.g. Wawn 2000). In the popular imagination they provide the comic-book archetypal pagans: marauding shaggy war bands living and dying by the sword, with no respect for person or

A Degradable Device for Sustainable Capillary Blood Sampling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
The device features a compostable 3D‐printed storage compartment for liquid blood collection and a degradable, poly(ɛ‐caprolactone)‐coated magnesium microneedle patch hidden within a suction cup. Manual compression deploys the MNs, creating small skin punctures, and the subsequent release of compression generates the negative pressure required for ...

Biointegrative fiber-reinforced implants for fixation of subchondral insufficiency with avascular necrosis: a case report

open access: yesJournal of Cartilage & Joint Preservation
Introduction: Treating avascular necrosis (AVN) of the knee can be challenging, particularly at later stages of progression. After subchondral collapse occurs, the only existing surgical treatment is arthroplasty.

Mechanical Failure in Intramedullary Interlocking Nails

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery, 2006
Purpose. To study clinical and mechanical factors that predispose to failure of interlocking nails. Methods. Between October 1996 and December 2002, 286 femoral fractures, 211 tibial fractures, and 47 humeral fractures were repaired using variously ...

CRISPR‐MI and scRNA‐Seq Reveal TREM2's Function in Monocyte Infiltration and Macrophage Apoptosis During Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Development

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A method is developed for conducting genome‐wide CRISPR/Cas9 screening of monocyte infiltration in vivo (CRISPR‐MI) that is easily adaptable across a variety of disease models. Through the combination of CRISPR‐MI and scRNA‐Seq, this study discovers that Trem2 is a key regulator of early monocyte infiltration in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA ...
