Classification and Current Management of Inner Ear Malformations

open access: yesBalkan Medical Journal, 2017
Morphologically congenital sensorineural hearing loss can be investigated under two categories. Majority of the congenital hearing loss (80%) are membranous malformations. Here the pathology involves inner ear hair cells.

Artificial Intelligence for Bone: Theory, Methods, and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer the potential to improve bone research. The current review explores the contributions of AI to pathological study, biomarker discovery, drug design, and clinical diagnosis and prognosis of bone diseases. We envision that AI‐driven methodologies will enable identifying novel targets for drugs discovery. The

Supra and subgingival application of antiseptics or antibiotics during periodontal therapy

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) are characterized by inflammatory processes which arise as a result of disruption of the balance in the oral ecosystem. According to the current S3 level clinical practice guidelines, therapy of patients with periodontitis involves a stepwise approach that includes the control of the patient ...

Material‐Based Intelligence: Autonomous Adaptation and Embodied Computation in Physical Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This perspective formulates a unifying framework for Material‐Based Intelligence (MBI), defining the physical requirements for materials to achieve embodied action, active memory and embodied information processing through intrinsic nonequilibrium dynamics. The design of intelligent materials often draws parallels with the complex adaptive behaviors of

Scanning Electron Microscopy in the Evaluation of Defects to the Ossicular Chain in the Course of Chronic Otitis Media

open access: yesEar, Nose & Throat Journal, 2021
Objective: Chronic otitis media is a heterogeneous disorder. Chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma and, to a lesser extent, chronic otitis media with granulation lead to the destruction of bone structures within the middle ear.

Cancer therapy‐induced ototoxicity: Current challenges and emerging management strategies

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This review comprehensively examines the key risk factors for cancer therapy‐induced ototoxicity, including cumulative drug dose, genetic susceptibility, and combined treatment regimens. It highlights current challenges in ototoxicity monitoring, such as insufficient timeliness and limited clinical adoption, and advocates for standardized auditory ...

A perspective from the Mesozoic: Evolutionary changes of the mammalian skull and their influence on feeding efficiency and high‐frequency hearing

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The complex evolutionary history behind modern mammalian chewing performance and hearing function is a result of several changes in the entire skeletomuscular system of the skull and lower jaw. Lately, exciting multifunctional 3D analytical methods and kinematic simulations of feeding functions in both modern and fossil mammals and their ...

Useful residual hearing despite radiological findings suggestive of anacusis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
A severe malformation of the inner ear, often referred to as severe labyrinthine dysplasia or common cavity deformity, consists of an absent or dilated cochlear basal coil, wide communication with the vestibule and a tapered internal acoustic meatus and ...

Can bony labyrinth dimensions predict biological sex in archaeological samples?

open access: yesJournal of Archaeological Science: Reports, 2020
Osipov and colleagues [American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2(151) 2013] previously posited that the dimensions of the bony labyrinth exhibit sexual dimorphism. Using a recent sample of known sex, they produced an age-independent, multivariate equation to predict biological sex using several of these dimensions.
