Based on a simple principle of order: i.e. the ability of the metal species to form or not to form binary bondes, binary carbides and ternary compounds, phase equilibria of all hitherto known ternary metal boron systems are classified by four major categories. Compound formation is generally observed with rather electropositive metal elements.

The issues of the composition-structure relationship of boron carbide are discussed. A new hypothesis based on the presence of channels with a diameter of 2.7–2.9 A in crystals, into which C or B atoms can be intruded, has been proposed. The intrusion has been confirmed by the data of quantum-chemical simulation using VASP program.

Phosphorus doping of boron carbides
Physical Review B, 1993Substitution of an electron donor such as phosphorus for a carbon or boron atom in [ital p]-type semiconducting boron carbides is expected to reduce the hole concentration. Phosphorus-doped boron carbide samples have been prepared by hot isostatic pressing with homogeneous dopant levels of up to one phosphorus atom per ten unit cells.

Fivefold twinned boron carbide nanowires
Nanotechnology, 2009Chemical composition and crystal structure of fivefold twinned boron carbide nanowires have been determined by electron energy-loss spectroscopy and electron diffraction. The fivefold cyclic twinning relationship is confirmed by systematic axial rotation electron diffraction. Detailed chemical analysis reveals a carbon-rich boron carbide phase.

Advanced microstructure of boron carbide
Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2012The rhombohedral elementary cell of the complex boron carbide structure is composed of B(12) or B(11)C icosahedra and CBC, CBB or B□B (□, vacancy) linear arrangements, whose shares vary depending on the actual chemical compound. The evaluation of the IR phonon spectra of isotopically pure boron carbide yields the quantitative concentrations of these ...

Processing of silicon carbide–boron carbide–aluminium composites
Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 2009Abstract The aim of this work was to shed light on the wetting mechanism in the SiC–B 4 C–Al system and to explore processing routes that enable infiltration of Al alloys into these ceramic powder mixtures without the formation of the deleterious reaction product Al 4 C 3 .

Sintering of Boron and Boron Carbide
Journal of Solid State Chemistry, 2000An investigation of sintering kinetics of boron and boron carbide is presented. The influence of the powder size distribution on the temperature dependence of sintering, on reaching a high final density, and on gaining a homogeneous grain size has been shown.
