The stereochemistry of the boswellic acids
Phytochemistry, 1968Abstract The configuration of the substituents at C(3), C(4), C(5), C(8), C(10), C(13) and C(17) in α- and β-boswellic acids have been shown to be identical by an ursane-oleanane interconversion. Synthetic and dehydration studies of the C(3) epimeric alcohols have confirmed the axial configuration of the hydroxyl group in the boswellic acids and ...

Boswellia serrata Roxb. is a source of several bioactive triterpenoids. Boswellic acid, obtained from oleo-gum resin of the tree, is a major potentially bioactive and medicinal compound. Unrestricted exploitation of its natural resource has led to its listing among the threatened and endangered species.

Effect of Boswellic acids on T cell proliferation and activation
International Immunopharmacology, 2023Boswellic acids have been recognized as anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory agents with potentials to control autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. However, their effects on T cell proliferation and activation are not fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated effects of individual compounds including β-Boswellic acids (β-BA), 11-keto-β ...

Boswellic acids: a group of medicinally important compounds
Nat. Prod. Rep., 2009This review, containing over 276 references, covers the progress made in the chemistry and bioactivity of this important group of triterpenoids. Though initially known for their anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities through a unique 5-LO inhibition mechanism, boswellic acids have recently attained significance due to their anti-cancer ...

Topical Boswellic acids for treatment of photoaged skin
Dermatologic Therapy, 2010Boswellic acids (BAs) are pentacyclic triterpenes extracted from the gum resins of the tropical tree Boswellia serrata. They are orally administered in traditional Indian medicine for the treatment of several inflammatory disease and cancer because of their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities as well as stimulatory effects on fibroblasts.

Advances and Challenges in the Analysis of Boswellic Acids by Separation Methods
Boswellia resin is an exudate from the cut bark of Boswellia trees. The main constituents of pharmacological interest are boswellic acids (pentacyclic triterpenoids), namely α-boswellic acid, β-boswellic acid, 3-O-acetyl-α-boswellic acid, 3-O-acetyl-β-boswellic acid, 11-keto-β-boswellic acid, and 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid.

Determination of 11-keto-boswellic acid in human plasma
Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, 2002A sensitive, specific, accurate, fast and reproducible GC/MS-method for the quantitative determination of 11-keto-boswellic acid in human plasma using 18alpha-glycyrrhetinic acid as the internal standard was developed and validated. 11-Keto-boswellic acid and the internal standard were separated from acidified plasma by liquid/liquid extraction.

Boswellic Acids and Their Role in Chronic Inflammatory Diseases
2016Boswellic acids, which are pentacyclic triterpenes belong to the active pharmacological compounds of the oleogum resin of different Boswellia species. In the resin, more than 12 different boswellic acids have been identified but only KBA and AKBA received significant pharmacological interest. Biological Activity: In an extract of the resin of Boswellia

Synthesis and pharmacokinetic profile of rhein- boswellic acid conjugate
Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2012Rhein, an active metabolite of diacerein, down-regulates the gene-expression and production of pro-matrix metalloproteinases and up-regulates the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1 production. The therapeutic effects of diacerein on osteoarthritis are, at least in part, due to the chondroprotective effect of rhein.
