Lone star ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infected with Bourbon virus in New Jersey, USA
Journal of Medical Entomology, 2023Abstract Lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum L.) are expanding within the northeast United States, a region historically focused on Ixodes scapularis-transmitted diseases. In Monmouth County, NJ, the shift has been dramatic, and lone star ticks now vastly outnumber blacklegged ticks.

The genus Thogotovirus, as represented by Thogoto virus and Dhori virus, comprises a group of arthropod-borne viruses, most members of which are transmitted by ticks. Here we report the genetic and biological characterization of a new thogotovirus, designated Oz virus (OZV), isolated from the hard tick Amblyomma testudinarium in Ehime, Japan.
