Brachyspira intermedia strain diversity and relationships to the other indole-positive Brachyspira species [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Microbiology, 2010
The aims of this study were to use multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to (i) investigate the population structure, diversity and molecular epidemiology of the weakly haemolytic anaerobic intestinal spirochaete Brachyspira intermedia, and (ii) determine the relationship of the species to the other two indole-positive but strongly haemolytic Brachyspira ...

Unification of the Genera Serpulina and Brachyspira, and Proposals of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae Comb. Nov., Brachyspira innocens Comb. Nov. and Brachyspira pilosicoli Comb. Nov. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology and Immunology, 1997
AbstractThe phylogenetic positions of Serpulina hyodysenteriae, Serpulina innocens, Serpulina pilosicoli and Brachyspira aalborgi were studied. Complete 16S ribosomal DNA sequences of these three species and B. aalborgi revealed that their 16S rDNA sequences were related more than 96.0%. The mol% guanine plus cytosine (G + C) of B.

Novel multiplex TaqMan assay for differentiation of the four major pathogenic Brachyspira species in swine

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2021
A novel TaqMan 5‐plex real‐time PCR using a combination of locked nucleic acid‐modified (LNA)‐ and minor groove binding (MGB)‐conjugated DNA probes was developed for identification and differentiation between the four main pathogenic Brachyspira species ...

Reclassification of Serpulina intermedia and Serpulina murdochii in the genus Brachyspira as Brachyspira intermedia comb. nov. and Brachyspira murdochii comb. nov. [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2006
A reassessment was undertaken of published characteristics of the five species of anaerobic intestinal spirochaetes in the genus Brachyspira (Brachyspira aalborgi, Brachyspira alvinipulli, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, Brachyspira innocens and Brachyspira pilosicoli) and the two species in the genus Serpulina (Serpulina intermedia and Serpulina murdochii)

First identification of "Brachyspira hampsonii" in wild European waterfowl.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Anseriformes deserve special attention in the epidemiology of Brachyspira spp. because diverse Anseriformes species have been described to act as highly efficient carriers of several Brachyspira spp. that can also infect livestock.

Influence of Tiamulin Therapy on Weight Gain in Brachyspira Dysentery in Piglets

open access: yesScientific Papers Animal Science and Biotechnologies, 2023
The aim of research was to evaluate the therapeutic and economic efficiency (daily individual weight gain / observation period) of two available tiamulin fumarate antibiotic conditionings (one oral and one injectable) in a farm environment, were ...

Colonizing the Unlikely: Brachyspira in an Immunocompetent Patient. [PDF]

open access: yesACG Case Rep J
ABSTRACT Chronic diarrhea is a common condition that medical professionals often encounter. We present an unusual case of chronic diarrhea in a relatively young, immunocompetent man that was attributed to Brachyspira. The patient's clinical presentation was not specific, and he underwent workup for common infectious, inflammatory, and ...

Identification of genes associated with prophage-like gene transfer agents in the pathogenic intestinal spirochaetes Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, Brachyspira pilosicoli and Brachyspira intermedia [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Microbiology, 2009
VSH-1 is an unusual prophage-like gene transfer agent (GTA) that has been described in the intestinal spirochaete Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. The GTA does not self-propagate, but it assembles into a virus-like particle and transfers random 7.5kb fragments of host DNA to other B. hyodysenteriae cells.

Complete genome sequence of Brachyspira intermedia reveals unique genomic features in Brachyspira species and phage-mediated horizontal gene transfer

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2011
Background Brachyspira spp. colonize the intestines of some mammalian and avian species and show different degrees of enteropathogenicity. Brachyspira intermedia can cause production losses in chickens and strain PWS/AT now becomes the fourth genome to ...

Correction to: The pathogenic intestinal spirochaete Brachyspira pilosicoli forms a diverse recombinant species demonstrating some local clustering of related strains and potential for zoonotic spread

open access: yesGut Pathogens, 2019
The article published in 2013 [1] described the use of the available Brachyspira multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme [2] to characterize the population structure of the intestinal spirochete Brachyspira pilosicoli.
