Indications for Stereotactic Biopsy in Brain Tumours
Acta Neurochirurgica, 1980The techniques of stereotactic biopsy of mass lesions of the brain are described, and the indications are discussed. Since computerized axial tomography has become available the decision to perform a stereotactic biopsy is made more frequently than previously.

Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 1999
Lesions within the brain are commonly sampled using stereotactic techniques. The advent of interventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging now allows neurosurgeons to interactively investigate specific regions with exquisite visualization. We compared the safety and efficacy of this new surgical approach with stereotaxis. From February 1991 to June 1998,

Brain stem glioma: The role of a biopsy
British Journal of Neurosurgery, 1991A retrospective review of the clinical and histopathological features of 31 patients with brain stem gliomas treated between 1965 and 1990 at Kyushu University Hospital was performed to determine the role of biopsy on these lesions. These 16 male and 15 female patients ranged in age from 3 to 50 years at diagnosis (average: 18.1 years).

Harefuah, 1995
During a 3-year period starting in 1991, 49 patients with brain lesions underwent 50 stereotactic brain biopsy procedures. The average age was 46 years (range 4-74). Specimens were taken from various brain regions, particularly from the deep aspect of the cerebral hemispheres and midline structures.

Brain Biopsy in Herpes Simplex Encephalitis
Pediatrics International, 1992Routine brain biopsy is often recommended in all patients suspected of having herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). This approach is based upon the lack of ability to make the diagnosis of HSE on clinical grounds, the need to exclude other diseases for which there is specific therapy, and to stop empiric therapies.

Brain biopsy for encephalitis.
Clinical neurosurgery, 1987Brain biopsy is justified in patients suspected of having encephalitis or viral encephalopathy because those patients are most likely to be helped if a diagnosis is made rapidly and with the greatest certainty possible. Neurosurgeons are occasionally reluctant to undertake brain biopsy because the procedure is diagnostic rather than therapeutic in ...
