A prospective pilot investigation of brain volume, white matter hyperintensities and haemorrhagic lesions after mild traumatic brain injury

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2016
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common neurological disorders. Haemorrhagic lesions and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) are radiological features associated with moderate and severe traumatic brain injury TBI.

Concussion case classification based on brain strain waveforms using dynamic time warping and cluster analysis

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanical Science and Engineering
In sports, concussion prevention measures require the development of concussion evaluation criteria for improved head protective gear or early intervention through impact measurement in the field.

A history of concussions is associated with symptoms of common mental disorders in former male professional athletes across a range of sports [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Objective: Recent reports suggest that exposure to repetitive concussions in sports is associated with an increased risk of symptoms of distress, anxiety and depression, sleep disturbance or substance abuse/dependence (typically referred as symptoms of ...

Diagnostic Problems in Diffuse Axonal Injury

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2020
In this study, three problems associated with diagnosing diffuse axonal injury (DAI) in patients with traumatic brain injury are reviewed: the shortage of scientific evidence supporting the 6-hour loss of consciousness (LOC) diagnostic criterion to ...

From Rigid to Soft Robotic Approaches for Neuroendoscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Robotic assistance has had minimal impact on deep intraventricular surgeries, where small‐scale, precision, and reduced invasiveness can contribute to improved patient outcomes. Emerging technologies in rigid, soft, and hybrid robotics are reviewed to identify the most promising mechanisms for deep brain navigation in addition to an attempt to identify

Connectomic markers of symptom severity in sport-related concussion: Whole-brain analysis of resting-state fMRI

open access: yesNeuroImage: Clinical, 2018
Concussion is associated with significant adverse effects within the first week post-injury, including physical complaints and altered cognition, sleep and mood. It is currently unknown whether these subjective disturbances have reliable functional brain

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Phenotypic Diversity and Outcomes in Pediatric NMDA Receptor Encephalitis: A 15‐Year Retrospective Study from the Largest Children's Hospital in the United States

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Anti‐NMDAR encephalitis (NMDARE) is an autoantibody‐mediated disorder characterized by seizures, movement disorders, neurocognitive deficits, and psychosis, but the complete phenotypic heterogeneity, and outcomes are incompletely understood in children.

Research progress on biomarkers of traumatic brain injury

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Traumatic brain injury: From primary insult to secondary neuroinflammation and degeneration. Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common disorder of the nervous system and has become a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, imposing a substantial burden on patients and their social circles. Its main symptoms include dyskinesia, language
