Plasma soluble prion protein, a potential biomarker for sport-related concussions: a pilot study. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Sport-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion is a significant health concern to athletes with potential long-term consequences. The diagnosis of sport concussion and return to sport decision making is one of the greatest challenges ...

From Rigid to Soft Robotic Approaches for Neuroendoscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Robotic assistance has had minimal impact on deep intraventricular surgeries, where small‐scale, precision, and reduced invasiveness can contribute to improved patient outcomes. Emerging technologies in rigid, soft, and hybrid robotics are reviewed to identify the most promising mechanisms for deep brain navigation in addition to an attempt to identify

CONCUSSION OF THE BRAIN [PDF]

open access: yesSouthern Medical Journal, 1910
In this day and generation a justification is desirable when a single case is reported. This is particularly in order when the case is one of cerebral concussion. Nevertheless, on account of the extraordinary symptom-complex and course of the case in question, I offer no apology for its presentation. History.— August 6, 1910, E.

Genetic findings in sport-related concussions: potential for individualized medicine?

open access: yesConcussion, 2017
Concussion is a traumatic transient disturbance of the brain. In sport, the initial time and severity of concussion is known giving an opportunity for subsequent analysis.

Dietary intake alters behavioural recovery and gene expression profiles in the brain of juvenile rats that have experienced a concussion

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2015
Concussion and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) research has made minimal progress diagnosing who will suffer from lingering symptomology or generating effective treatment strategies.

Mapping brain recovery after concussion

open access: yesNeurology, 2019
Objective To test the hypothesis that concussion-related brain alterations seen at symptomatic injury and medical clearance to return to play (RTP) will have dissipated by 1 year after RTP.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Lasting consequences of concussion on the aging brain: Findings from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2020
Studies suggest that concussions may be related to increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and Alzheimer's Disease.

Concussive brain injury from explosive blast [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, 2014
Explosive blast mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is associated with a variety of symptoms including memory impairment and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Explosive shock waves can cause hippocampal injury in a large animal model. We recently reported a method for detecting brain injury in soldiers with explosive blast mTBI using magnetic ...

Visualizing and Quantifying Impact with Mechanochromic Sensing Paints Based on Self‐Assembled Polydiacetylene‐Silk Core‐Shell Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tracking physical impacts is important in many fields. Self‐assembled microparticles made from polydiacetylene and silk fibroin that change color from blue to red when hit can provide an alternative approach to traditional mechanical transducers, quantitatively visualizing impact with responses ranging from <100 to 770 N.
