Tumor metastasis is a complex, multistep process that appears to be dependent upon a number of host and tumor properties (Fidler 1975a; Weiss 1977a; Fidler and Nicolson 1979; Nicolson 1978a). First, emergent malignant tumor cells must be able to survive and grow in a potentially hostile environment and proliferate to form a primary tumor.
