To infinity and some glimpses of beyond

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Certain physical problems such as the rupture of a thin sheet can be difficult to solve as computations breakdown at the point of rupture. Here the authors propose a regularization approach to overcome this breakdown which could help dealing with ...

Where does N(ε)-trimethyllysine for the carnitine biosynthesis in mammals come from? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
N(ε)-trimethyllysine (TML) is a non-protein amino acid which takes part in the biosynthesis of carnitine. In mammals, the breakdown of endogenous proteins containing TML residues is recognized as starting point for the carnitine biosynthesis.

Reliability Prediction of Highly Scaled MOSFET Devices via Fractal Structure of Spatial Defects

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
The needs for continuous size reduction of metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) devices can cause serious reliability concerns. In particular, gate oxide breakdown is a key mechanism concerning the lifetimes of MOSFET devices.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Comparative Study of Breakdown Voltage of Mineral, Synthetic and Natural Oils and Based Mineral Oil Mixtures under AC and DC Voltages

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
This paper deals with a comparative study of AC and DC breakdown voltages of based mineral oil mixtures with natural and synthetic esters mainly used in high voltage power transformers.

The Estimation of Lightning Impulses Superimposed onto Pre-Stressed DC Breakdown Voltages Using the Leader Propagation Method

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
The impulse breakdown attributes are of rudimentary importance in the insulation coordination in the gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The critical voltage waveshape for the insulation is the surge over voltages.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Low-Area Four-Channel Controlled Dielectric Breakdown System Design for Point-of-Care Applications

open access: yesSensors, 2022
In this study, we propose a low-area multi-channel controlled dielectric breakdown (CDB) system that simultaneously produces several nanopore sensors. Conventionally, solid-state nanopores are prepared by etching or drilling openings in a silicon nitride

Grüneisen Ratio at the Kondo-Breakdown Quantum Critical Point

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2008
We show that the scenario of multi-scale Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (QCP) gives rise to a divergent Gr neisen ratio with an anomalous exponent 0.7. In particular, we fit the experimental data of $YbRh_{2}(Si_{0.95}Ge_{0.05})_{2}$ for specific heat, thermal expansion, and Gr neisen ratio based on our simple analytic expressions.

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).
