Classification of Breast Tissue Density

2020
Breast density classification plays an important role in breast cancer screening. Radiologists visually evaluate mammograms to classify it according to breast tissue density. In this work, automatic breast tissue density classification is presented which consists of preprocessing of mammograms, breast tissue segmentation, feature extraction from the ...

Implications of breast density for breast cancer screening

JAAPA
ABSTRACT Extremely dense breasts can be an independent risk factor for breast cancer. A new FDA rule requires that patients be notified of their breast density and the possible benefits of additional imaging to screen for breast cancer. Clinicians should be cognizant of the data about breast cancer risk, breast density, and recommendations to

Breast Density into Clinical Practice

2012
It is well established that breast density is related to breast cancer risk; making that connection precise, and understanding how to use it in clinical practice, has been a major academic focus since the 1970's. However, it transpires that the first clinical uses of breast density have not been for risk prediction, rather they are for judging when to ...

Hormones and mammographic breast density

Maturitas, 2004
Mammographic density reveals information about the hormonal environment along with the heritability in which breast cancer develops. This is made possible by the widespread use of population screening by mammography. Increasingly this is an important observation not just for population studies, which reveal disease determinants, but also for the ...

Education and mammographic breast density

Breast Cancer Research and Treatment
There are conflicting reports on the associations of education with mammographic breast density (MBD). To address this, we investigated the associations of education with MBD and additionally determined if and to what extent this association is mediated by known confounders such as age and adiposity.Women (n = 1155) were recruited during their annual ...

Quantifying Breast Thickness for Density Measurement

2008
The largest source of error in the estimation of volumetric breast density typically arises from inaccuracies in the measurement of breast thickness. We present a method which accounts for paddle tilt and show that the variation within the compressed breast region may be as much as 21.2mm in the chest wall to nipple direction.

Mammographic Breast Density and Breast Cancer Risk: Implications of the Breast Density Legislation for Health Care Practitioners

Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2016
Breast density has emerged as a critical phenotypic marker of increased breast cancer risk. The breast density legislation, passed in multiple states, requires patient notification of the implications of the breast density on breast cancer risk and screening.
