Critical Review of Volatile Organic Compound Analysis in Breath and In Vitro Cell Culture for Detection of Lung Cancer

open access: yesMetabolites, 2019
Breath analysis is a promising technique for lung cancer screening. Despite the rapid development of breathomics in the last four decades, no consistent, robust, and validated volatile organic compound (VOC) signature for lung cancer has been identified.

Identification of Exhaled Metabolites in Children with Cystic Fibrosis

open access: yesMetabolites, 2022
The early detection of inflammation and infection is important to prevent irreversible lung damage in cystic fibrosis. Novel and non-invasive monitoring tools would be of high benefit for the quality of life of patients.

Independent Information of Nonspecific Biomarkers in Exhaled Breath Condensate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) has been used for diagnosing and monitoring respiratory disorders. For clinical purposes the assessment of easy-to-obtain nonspecific markers seems particularly interesting.

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Al-Doped MoSe2 Monolayer as a Promising Biosensor for Exhaled Breath Analysis: A DFT Study

open access: yesACS Omega, 2020
Exhaled breath analysis by nanosensors is a workable and rapid manner to diagnose lung cancer in the early stage. In this paper, we proposed Al-doped MoSe2 (Al–MoSe2) as a promising biosensor for sensing three typically exhaled volatile organic compounds

Current definitions of the breathing cycle in alveolar breath-by-breath gas exchange analysis

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 2023
Identification of the breathing cycle forms the basis of any breath-by-breath gas exchange analysis. Classically, the breathing cycle is defined as the time interval between the beginning of two consecutive inspiration phases. Based on this definition, several research groups have developed algorithms designed to estimate the volume and rate of gas ...

Tumor‐stromal crosstalk and macrophage enrichment are associated with chemotherapy response in bladder cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemoresistance in bladder cancer: Macrophage recruitment associated with CXCL1, CXCL5 and CXCL8 expression is characteristic of Gemcitabine/Cisplatin (Gem/Cis) Non‐Responder tumors (right side) while Responder tumors did not show substantial tumor‐stromal crosstalk (left side). All biological icons are attributed to Bioicons: carcinoma, cancerous‐cell‐

Analysis of Olfactive Prints from Artificial Lung Cancer Volatolome with Nanocomposite-Based vQRS Arrays for Healthcare

open access: yesBiosensors
Exhaled breath analysis is emerging as one of the most promising non-invasive strategies for the early detection of life-threatening diseases, especially lung cancer, where rapid and reliable diagnosis remains a major clinical challenge.

Comparison of T1 mapping techniques for ECV quantification. histological validation and reproducibility of ShMOLLI versus multibreath-hold T1 quantification equilibrium contrast CMR [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: Myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) is elevated in fibrosis or infiltration and can be quantified by measuring the haematocrit with pre and post contrast T1 at sufficient contrast equilibrium.

Prediction of Myasthenia Gravis Worsening: A Machine Learning Algorithm Using Wearables and Patient‐Reported Measures

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare disorder characterized by fluctuating muscle weakness with potential life‐threatening crises. Timely interventions may be delayed by limited access to care and fragmented documentation. Our objective was to develop predictive algorithms for MG deterioration using multimodal telemedicine data ...
