Briaexcavatolide W, a New Diterpenoid from Briareum excavatum

Reproductive success in the Caribbean octocoral Briareum asbestinum

For most sessile marine invertebrates the number of offspring produced by an individual is often determined indirectly from counts of eggs present, with the assumption that all or most become viable offspring. Few field data on the actual number of offspring produced per individual (reproductive success) have been reported.

Briarane Diterpenes from a Gorgonian Briareum Sp.

Eleven new briarane diterpenes have been isolated from a gorgonian Briareum sp., collected in the area of Bonotsu, Kagoshima Prefecture. Their structural elucidation and cytotoxicity tests toward Vero and MDCK cells were performed.

New hydroperoxybriarane diterpenoids from the octocoral Briareum violaceum

Abstract A known briarane, brianthein W (1), along with four new hydroperoxybriaranes, briaviolides R–U (2–5), have been obtained from the octocoral Briareum violaceum. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by X-ray analysis for the first time and the structures of briaranes 2–5 were established by spectroscopic methods.

Vegetative reproduction in the octocoral Briareum asbestinum (Pallas)

Abstract Briareum asbestinum (Pallas), a common octocoral of Caribbean reefs, produces runner-like branches which are capable of attaching to the substratum and establishing new colonies. The subsequent death of the intervening runner leaves groups of genetically identical but physiologically distinct colonies.
