Lightness and brightness [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2007
What is lightness? Lightness is the perceptual dimension that runs from black, through gray, to white. The physical counterpart of lightness is the permanent property of a surface that determines what percentage of light the surface reflects. Surfaces that appear white reflect about 90% of the light striking them. Black surfaces reflect about 3%.

A Cortical Edge-integration Model of Object-Based Lightness Computation that Explains Effects of Spatial Context and Individual Differences

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2014
Previous work demonstrated that perceived surface reflectance (lightness) can be modeled in simple contexts in a quantitatively exact way by assuming that the visual system first extracts information about local, directed steps in log luminance, then ...

Characteristics of Photon Beam and Preservation of Coherence in Fourth-Generation Light Sources

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Fourth-generation storage rings (4GSRs) that exploit the multi-bend achromat lattice concept may be able to surpass the brightness and coherence that are attained using the present third-generation storage rings.

Physical Characteristics of Edible Film from Breadfruit Peel using Xylitol as Plasticizer [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2021
Breadfruit peel derived from peeling waste from processed products made from breadfruit. Currently, breadfruit is only used for its flesh, while the peel of breadfruit is usually discarded or used as animal feed. Breadfruit peel flour has a fiber content

Brightness of Synchrotron radiation from Undulators and Bending Magnets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We consider the maximum of the Wigner distribution (WD) of synchrotron radiation (SR) fields as a possible definition of SR source brightness. Such figure of merit was originally introduced in the SR community by Kim.

Effect of Gamma Radiation on Greasy and Scoured Wool, Irradiated in Mini-Bale Form

open access: yesJournal of Natural Fibers, 2022
The effect of gamma radiation dose on certain properties of wool treated in either greasy or scoured form in mini-bales was investigated. Specific properties studied include color (yellowness and brightness), solubility (alkali solubility and urea ...
