Preatmospheric Detection of a Meter-sized Earth Impactor

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal, 2023
On 2020 September 18 U.S. Government (USG) sensors detected a bolide with peak bolometric magnitude of −19 over the Western Pacific. The impact was also detected by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper instrument on the GOES-17 satellite and infrasound ...

OneWeb Satellite Brightness -- Characterized From 80,000 Visible Light Magnitudes

open access: yes, 2022
The mean apparent magnitude and the mean of magnitudes adjusted to a standard distance are reported. The illumination phase function for OneWeb satellites is determined and it differs strongly from that of VisorSat spacecraft. Brightness flares are characterized and the mean rate of magnitude variation during a pass is determined.

Stellar population synthesis at the resolution of 2003 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We present a new model for computing the spectral evolution of stellar populations at ages between 1 x 10 5 and 2 x 10 1 0 yr at a resolution of 3 A across the whole wavelength range from 3200 to 9500 A for a wide range of metallicities.

Luminosity and surface brightness distribution of K-band galaxies from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present luminosity and surface brightness distributions of 40,111 galaxies with K-band photometry from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS), Data Release 3 and optical photometry from ...

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Thermionic emission in gold nanoparticles under femtosecond laser irradiation observed with photoemission electron microscopy

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2019
This study reports that thermionic emission can dominate over multi-photon ionization in gold nanoparticles under femtosecond laser irradiation. The brightness of individual particles observed with photoemission electron microscopy increased steeply for ...

First Synoptic Observations of Geomagnetic Storm Effects on the Global‐Scale OI 135.6‐nm Dayglow in the Thermosphere by the GOLD Mission

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
The Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission provides, for the first time, a synoptic view of the thermospheric response to a moderate geomagnetic storm at a 30‐min cadence.

Approaching the Tsirelson bound with a Sagnac source of polarization-entangled photons

open access: yesSciPost Physics, 2021
High-fidelity polarization-entangled photons are a powerful resource for quantum communication, distributing entanglement and quantum teleportation. The Bell-CHSH inequality $S\leq2$ is violated by bipartite entanglement and only maximally entangled ...

Single-stage plasma-based correlated energy spread compensation for ultrahigh 6D brightness electron beams

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Plasma photocathode wakefield acceleration combines energy gains of tens of GeV m−1 with generation of ultralow emittance electron bunches, and opens a path towards 5D-brightness orders of magnitude larger than state-of-the-art.

Evolution in the Cluster Early-type Galaxy Size-Surface Brightness Relation at z =~ 1

open access: yes, 2005
We investigate the evolution in the distribution of surface brightness, as a function of size, for elliptical and S0 galaxies in the two clusters RDCS J1252.9-2927, z=1.237 and RX J0152.7-1357, z=0.837. We use multi-color imaging with the Advanced Camera
