Comparison of the surface abrasion produced by two different bristle materials – An In vitro pilot study

open access: yesAdvances in Human Biology
Introduction: Gingival, periodontal diseases and dental caries are the most prevalent diseases of the oral cavity. Plaque is the main cause of these dental diseases. Plaque control is of prime importance for the maintenance of oral and dental health. The

‘Guide and Prejudice’— How Argonautes recognize targets across domains of life

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Argonaute proteins use short nucleic‐acid guides to locate and regulate specific targets across all domains of life. Despite striking diversity—from human gene silencing to bacterial immune defence—all Argonautes share a conserved three‐stage recognition logic: guide‐directed sampling, progressive target pairing with a conformational checkpoint and ...

Modeling bristle lift-off in idealized brush seal configurations [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
We attempt in this paper to develop a model for the flow through brush seals and determine their elastic behavior in order to predict the dependence of brush/journal clearance on geometry and operating conditions.

Spatial distribution of Scabrous protein during bristle patterning stages.

open access: yes, 2023
(A) Example of apicobasal distribution of Scabrous protein (arrowheads, white puncta, anti-Scabrous) in the notum, with bristle precursor cell marked by red nuclei (anti-senseless). Phalloidin is used to stain filamentous actin (green).

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Sex comb bristle number variation in Drosophila melanogaster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The sex comb an array of specialized bristles on the foreleg, is a highly variable male trait of Drosophila that provides an ideal system for integrative studies of morphological evolution.

A general mechanical formulation of two-dimensional bristle friction models with a focus on the LuGre model and its dynamics

open access: yesForces in Mechanics
Friction is an important phenomenon in the modeling of mechanical systems. To represent the dynamic properties of friction, bristle models such as the LuGre model are used mostly in the one-dimensional case.

A new species of silverfsh of the genus Sceletolepisma Wygodzinsky, 1955 (Zygentoma: Lepismatidae) from Oman [PDF]

open access: yesКавказский энтомологический бюллетень
A new species Sceletolepisma omanicum sp. n. from the Sultanate of Oman in West Asia on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula is described and illustrated. Te species is related to similar species S. maroccanum (Mendes, 1980), S.

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...
