The fracture of brittle materials
British Journal of Applied Physics, 1967This review discusses systematically the nature of the cleavage crack and the structural features and mechanisms which contribute to the nucleation of cracks and which assist or retard their propagation in a wide variety of materials.

Environment induced failure of brittle and quasi-brittle materials
Materials Chemistry and Physics, 2002It has long been known that the strength of oxide ceramics and glasses is influenced significantly by the presence of water. This not only leads to a strength redn. but also to a strain-rate effect. Conventionally, these effects are explained by the reaction of water at the crack tip with the metal-oxygen bonds.
