Genetic Parameter Estimation for Pregnancy Loss and Their Association With Reproductive and Growth Traits in Brahman Cattle Under Extensive Tropical Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 2, Page 365-374, March 2026.
ABSTRACT This study estimated genetic parameters for pregnancy loss (PL) in Brahman cattle and evaluated the genetic correlation of PL with growth and reproductive traits using both the pedigree relationship matrix (A) and pedigree plus genomic relationship matrix (H). Data were collected from two herds in Bolivia, focusing on three age groups: heifers,

Temporal dynamics of sperm morphology in broiler breeders: Evidence of rapid non-linear patterns of decline

open access: yesPoultry Science
Broilers are the cornerstone of poultry meat production. However, recent trends have raised concerns about broiler breeder fertility/ hatchability, which is predicted to decline to 60% by 2050. Data from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS)

The welfare of broiler breeders

open access: yesAnimal Welfare, 1999
In August 1998, the UK's Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) published its most recent report: addressing the welfare of broiler breeders. Some 780 million broiler chicks are produced annually in the UK and at any one time the national population of broiler breeder hens that produce these chicks is about 6 million.

Achieving reproductive performance and quality chicks with modern broiler breeders

open access: yesJournal of Applied Poultry Research
Summary: The U.S. broiler industry is currently facing challenges in breeder production and hatchability. Hatchability rates have recently dropped below 82 %, the lowest since 1988 (Agristats Report, 2023), alongside increased mortality in pullets ...

Lysine: Amino acid requirements of broiler breeders

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1998
Because feed intake is controlled in broiler breeders, amino acid supply is determined by the composition of the feed and the level of feed intake. Controlling amino acid supply during the laying cycle can be facilitated by the use of a model for calculating requirements. A possible model is outlined and the various components discussed.
