A baseline study of tropical phytoplankton abundance and its relationships to the environmental variables in the Terengganu river estuary, Malaysia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Phytoplankton is a vital and important organism as a producer of the primary food supply of the marine and freshwater food webs. This study is conducted to investigate the variability of phytoplankton abundance related to environmental variables in the ...

Controlling Lampenflora in Heritage Sites: In Situ Testing of Polyoxometalate–Ionic Liquids in the Pommery Champagne Cellar

open access: yesChemPlusChem, EarlyView.
The article evaluates polyoxometalate–ionic liquids (POM–ILs) as biocidal agents against lampenflora in the UNESCO‐listed Pommery Champagne cellar. POM–ILs effectively inhibit microbial colonization over one year with minimal visual impact and outperform the commercial biocide Preventol RI80.

Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) stressors and illnesses: a review for a sustainable aquaculture under climate change

open access: yesFrontiers in Aquaculture
Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) dominate intertidal and shallow subtidal areas globally, where larger species form extensive underwater forests. These structurally complex and highly productive habitats enhance local biodiversity and support food webs in ...

No Evidence for the Induction of Brown Algal Chemical Defense by the Phytohormones Jasmonic Acid and Methyl Jasmonate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Induced chemical defense reactions are widespread in marine brown algae. Despite the evidence that the biosynthesis of defense metabolites can be up-regulated upon herbivory, we do not know how this regulation of biosynthetic pathways to secondary ...

Recent Advances in Understanding the Sex Pheromone‐Mediated Communication of Diatoms

open access: yesChemPlusChem, EarlyView.
Pheromones control the sexuality and mate finding in diatoms, a group of highly abundant unicellular marine algae. The diatom pheromones presented here are elucidated using a metabolomics‐based approach. This review introduces new structures, methods, and conceptual advances and discusses future perspectives in diatom research.

Sexual maturity and performance of pullets fed different preparations and concentrations of brown marine algae (Sargassum dentifebium) in pre-laying and early laying periods

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2014
The effect of brown marine algae (BMA; Sargassum dentifebium) as alternative feed source for pullets was studied in three processed and at three concentrations in the pullets from 14-42 weeks. The processing forms were sundried brown marine algae (SBMA),
