We are storytelling apes: Experimenting with new scientific narratives in a time of climate and biodiversity collapse

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Provoked by a lack of appropriate political action on the global climate and biodiversity crisis, we present a perspective advocating and demonstrating a new plurality in scientific communication methods. Science writing, in being objective and dispassionate, actively seeks to mask empathetic connection and hides curiosities that may exist ...

Orbital migration and the brown dwarf desert [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2002
The orbital elements of extreme mass ratio binaries will be modified by interactions with surrounding circumstellar disks. For brown dwarf companions to Solar-type stars the resulting orbital migration is sufficient to drive short period systems to merger, creating a brown dwarf desert at small separations.

Effect and Mechanism of an ACT‐Based Psychological Resilience Intervention Targeting Students Failing in Postgraduate Entrance Examinations in China: A Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesPsyCh Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The postgraduate entrance examination frenzy is a widespread and intense phenomenon in China. As the number of students who failed the examination surged, the ensuing mental health problems became prominent. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an online ACT‐based group resilience course, which incorporated the six core components

Physical Parameters and Properties of 20 Cold Brown Dwarfs in JWST

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a comprehensive analysis of 20 T and Y dwarfs using spectroscopy from the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) CLEAR/PRISM and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) low-resolution spectrometer instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope.

Metal-Depleted Brown Dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This chapter reviews our current knowledge of metal-poor ultracool dwarfs with spectral types later than M7. The current census of M, L, and T subdwarfs is explored. The main colour trends of subdwarfs from the optical to the mid-infrared are described and their spectral features presented, which led to a preliminary and tentative spectral ...

HCN and C2H2 in the Atmosphere of a T8.5+T9 Brown Dwarf Binary

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
T-type brown dwarfs present an opportunity to explore atmospheres teeming with molecules such as H _2 O, CH _4 , and NH _3 , which exhibit a wealth of absorption features in the mid-infrared.

Rotational Periods of very Young Brown Dwarfs in ChaI [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2002
A photometric monitoring campaign of brown dwarfs in the ChaI star forming region in the i and R band revealed significant periodic variations of the three M6.5-M7 type brown dwarf candidates ChaHa2, 3 and 6 (Joergens et al. 2002). These are the first rotational periods for very young (1-5 Myr) brown dwarfs and among the first rotational periods for ...

Episodic outbursts during brown dwarf formation [PDF]

open access: yesA&A 696, A104 (2025)
There is evidence that stars and browns dwarfs grow through episodic rather than continuous gas accretion. However, the role of episodic accretion in the formation of brown dwarfs remains mostly unexplored. We investigate the role of episodic accretion, triggered by the magnetorotational instability in the inner disk regions, resulting in episodic ...

Landrace diversity and heritage of the indigenous millet crop fonio (Digitaria exilis): Socio‐cultural and climatic drivers of change in the Fouta Djallon region of Guinea

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
White fonio (Digitaria exilis [Kippist] Stapf) is an understudied millet crop, indigenous to West Africa and cultivated in the region largely through traditional practices. This species is climate‐resilient, fast‐growing, nutritionally rich, and provides livelihoods and food security to rural communities.

Medium-resolution 0.97–5.3 μm Spectra of Very Young Benchmark Brown Dwarfs with NIRSpec on Board the James Webb Space Telescope

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Spectra of young benchmark brown dwarfs with well-known ages are vital to characterize other brown dwarfs, for which ages are in general not known. These spectra are also crucial to test atmospheric models, which have the potential to provide detailed ...
