Aspects of Brush Seal Design

51st AIAA/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference, 2015
The use of Brush Seals continues to expand in both the Power Generation and the Aerospace markets; being applied to more demanding locations and operating environments. Over the last 35 years, much has been learned about brush seal functionality and detailed design procedures and codes have been developed and refined.

Characterization of Brush Seal Permeability

Volume 5A: Heat Transfer, 2016
A basis for the study of flow through a brush seal is established by applying the fundamentals of porous media fluid mechanics. Permeability, the measure of a medium’s ability to transmit flow, is one of the most important factors needed to characterize a brush seal’s ability to reduce leakage.

Brush Seal Pack Hysteresis

38th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2002
The hysteresis loop that brush seals produce when they are stiffness checked has proved hard to evaluate using simple beam theory. The development of a Finite Element Analysis model of a brush seal pack is tracked through from simple beam element models through to complex multi layer non -linear models.

Evaluation of brush seals for oil sealing applications [PDF]

open access: possible, 2012
After proven performance in gas turbine secondary flow and hot gas path sealing applications, brush seals are being considered for oil and oil mist applications in aero-engines and industrial turbines. In oil sealing applications shear heating and oil coking are major concerns. The field experience indicates that shear heating and oil coking issues can
