Soil health assessment using buried cotton underpants with the help of 1000 citizen scientists

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Soil is a vital resource for life on Earth. Although many soils are degraded, societal awareness of soil‐related issues is limited. To highlight soil as a key resource and fascinating study system, we initiated a citizen science project together with 1000 participants investigating soil health across Switzerland using buried cotton underpants.

Innovation in pest management: can the past inform the future?

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Progress in pest management occurred incrementally, but occasionally, transformative discoveries introduced disruptive technologies. Looking ahead, generative artificial intelligence is expected to accelerate agricultural discovery by integrating vast datasets from mechanization, genetics, and chemistry.

Pollen- and seed-mediated transgene flow in commercial cotton seed production fields. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BACKGROUND: Characterizing the spatial patterns of gene flow from transgenic crops is challenging, making it difficult to design containment strategies for markets that regulate the adventitious presence of transgenes. Insecticidal Bacillus thuringiensis

Improved impact from the use of beneficial natural enemy species in Australian canola systems: challenges and required tools

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
In canola production systems in Australia, practices for the use of beneficials (arthropod predators and parasitoids) as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, have not been widely adopted. We outline how canola growers and their advisors can be supported with incremental steps, from passive to active management, to help shift them from ...

Effects of temperature on the feeding behavior of Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on Bt and non-Bt cotton plants

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2017
The host acceptance behavior and environmental factors as temperature affect the feeding behavior of Lepidoptera pests. Thus, they must be considered in studies about the risk potential of resistance evolution.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Indian Bt cotton varieties do not affect the performance of cotton aphids. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2009
Cotton varieties expressing Cry proteins derived from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are grown worldwide for the management of pest Lepidoptera.

Helicoverpa zea and Bt Cotton in the United States [PDF]

open access: yesGM Crops & Food, 2012
Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), the bollworm or corn earworm, is the most important lepidopteran pest of Bt cotton in the United States. Corn is the preferred host, but the insect feeds on most flowering crops and wild host plants. As a cotton pest, bollworm has been closely linked to the insecticide-resistance prone Heliothis virescens (F.), tobacco budworm.

Seasonal Difference of Gut Microbiota at a Stopover Site in Five Passerines of Different Migratory Behavior

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Seasonal variation significantly reshaped gut microbiota composition in migratory passerine species, whereas the resident species Suthora webbiana showed no clear seasonal shift. Species with similar migratory behaviors exhibited consistent seasonal patterns in their core gut microbiota.

Transgenic cotton and farmers' health in Pakistan.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Despite substantial research on the economic effects of transgenic insect-resistant Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton, there is still limited work on this technology's impacts on human health.
