Chessboard-like buckling modes of compressed materials

Doklady Physics, 2012
A transversally isotropic uniform elastic medium is considered during uniform compression in the isotropy plane. Under definite assumptions on the elasticity moduli of the material, it is established that the buckling mode during the postcritical compression has a stable chessboard-like character.

Elastic Buckling with Infinitely Many Local Modes

Mechanics of Structures and Machines, 1987
ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In some cases, asymptotic methods present an appealing alternative to full nonlinear analyses. In other cases, the value of an asymptotic analysis may merely be that, in a qualitative way, it can characterize the behavior of a structure.

Buckling mode shapes of thin-walled members

Computers & Structures, 1995
Summary: An analytical procedure to estimate not only the elastic buckling loads but also buckling mode shapes by transfer matrix method is presented. The transfer matrix is derived from the differential equations for the plate subjected to axial load.

FINITE ELEMENTS FOR THREE-MODE INTERACTION IN BUCKLING ANALYSIS

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1996
This paper presents a finite element formulation for the buckling mode interaction analysis of structures modelled as plate assemblies. The main assumptions are linear elasticity, a linear fundamental path, the existence of distinct critical states that are coincident or near coincident, and a coupled path arising from a linear combination of modal ...

Koiter's Buckling Mode for Short Cylindrical Shells

AIAA Journal, 1972
All working equations (except the assumed deflections) are derived from operations performed on the energy functional, that is, the summation of all the quadratic energy terms associated with the deformation during buckling, as developed by Koiter. This is given in Ref. 1 and has been modified in Ref.

Mode jumping of imperfect, buckled. rectangular plates

1984
One of the most fascinating phenomena in the buckling and postbuckling behavior of rectangular plates is mode jumping. By mode jumping we understand a sudden change in the wave number of the buckled deflection surface during a loading process.

BUCKLING LOAD AND POST-BUCKLING SOLUTION FOR MODE SHAPE OF DELAMINATED BEAM

2012
This paper presents elastic buckling and post-buckling analysis of an axially loaded isotropic beam-plate with an across-the- width delamination located at a given depth, subjected to in-plane compression. A simple analytical model for determining the global buckling load of the plate with delamination and the mode shape is developed, for various ...

Complex Buckling Modes in Asymmetric Cell Lattices

Nuclear Science and Engineering, 1979
It is shown how a slab lattice of asymmetric cells can support complex macroscopic buckling modes leading to an effective drift of neutrons in a preferred direction. Expressions for the smeared lattice cell diffusion and drift coefficients that describe this effect are given.
