Effect of buffelgrass fires on two Sonoran Desert trees: Bark and structural analyses

, 2020
The introduction of exotic buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare) to the Sonoran Desert has modified the structure and fuel loads of desert scrub, creating a continuous fuel bed and altering fire frequencies and intensities. The damage to native vegetation has

Spittlebug (Homoptera: Cercopidae) Life Cycle on Buffelgrass in Northwestern Mexico

Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 1995
The spittlebug, Aeneolamia albofasciata Lalleman, is the most economically important insect pest of buffelgrass pastures in Mexico. In 1984-1986 we studied the effect of climate on the life cycle of this insect in Sonora, Mexico, by monitoring spittlebug nymph and adult densities in relation to summer precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures.

Gene Transfer in Apomictic Buffelgrass through Fertilization of an Unreduced Egg

Crop Science, 1990
Opportunities for gene manipulation are often limited in apomictic species, and conventional breeding methods may be totally ineffective. Lack of good sexual germplasm led us to investigate improvement of apomictic buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) through fertilization of an unreduced egg (2n+n), using an apomict as the female parent.

Evaluation of Herbicides for Restoring Native Grasses in Buffelgrass‐Dominated Grasslands

Restoration Ecology, 2007
Abstract Buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare) is an exotic grass that threatens arid and semiarid ecosystems. The objective of this study was to determine effectiveness of several herbicides at reducing competition from buffelgrass to enhance establishment of planted native grasses.

Multiple Embryo Sacs in Sexual Buffelgrass Treated with Ammonium Sulfate

Crop Science, 1990
Ovules of sexual genotypes of buffelgrass, Cenchrus ciliaris L., form a single meiotically reduced embryo sac of the polygonum type. In contrast, apomictic lines develop one to several unreduced aposporic sacs which lack antipodals. Seeking chemical means to manipulate embryo sac formation, we watered sexual plants, bearing premeiotic inflorescences ...
