Acetylcholinesterase and Butyrylcholinesterase of Cat

Domestic cat (Felis domesticus) pituitary cDNA and leukocyte genomic DNA were amplified by PCR and sequenced for the protein coding regions of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE). ~2 kb of BCHE cDNA and ~4 kb of the ACHE gene with introns were sequenced. Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris) pituitary cDNA was sequenced for BCHE.

The butyrylcholinesterase (BChE [EC 3.1.1.8]) knockout mouse is a model for BChE deficiency in humans. The existence of genetic variants of human BChE was discovered after a new muscle relaxant, succinylcholine, was introduced into the practice of medicine in the late 1950s.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE, EC.3.1.1.8) is a hydrolytic enzyme of unknown function. Although it is usually considered in conjunction with acetylcholinesterase (AChE), BChE is the product of a different gene, has a much more restricted distribution in the mammalian brain and has no major role in conventional cholinergic neurotransmission.
