Non-commercial fish species in by-catch composition of shrimp trawl landing from Mahshahr creeks [PDF]
Non-commercial fish species of shrimp trawls were studied monthly from October 2005 to September 2006 in Mahshahr creeks (Darvish, Doragh, Bihad, Ghazaleh, Ghanam, Zangi and Patil). The trawl nets had a cod-end mesh size of 24mm.

Diversity of Shallow-Water Species in Prawn Trawling: A Case Study of Malindi–Ungwana Bay, Kenya
Bottom trawling is a common fishing method that targets bottom-dwelling fisheries resources. It is non-selective and large amounts of by-catch are discarded, raising serious sustainability and ecosystem conservation concerns.

By-catch is considered a significant problem in large-scale fisheries yet in small-scale fisheries (SSF), employing >99% of the world's fishers, there is limited quantitative understanding of by-catch, and catches in general.

Porpoises, by‐catch and the ‘pinger’ conundrum
AbstractThe UK is committed to reducing or eliminating the by‐catch of protected species in fisheries. Of key concern is the by‐catch of harbour porpoise in static nets. Fishers do not want to catch harbour porpoise, and the only proven effective mitigation measure currently available is an acoustic device known as a ‘pinger’.Legislative requirements ...

Marine mammal population decline linked to obscured by-catch [PDF]
Significance Declines of marine megafauna such as turtles, pinnipeds, and whales are often related to mortality caused by capture or entanglement in fisheries gear. To help recovery of these species, trawl fisheries have implemented exclusion devices that release nontarget species.
