Metabolic Flexibility of Microglia: Energy Substrate Utilization and Impact on Neuronal Metabolism

Microglia safeguard neuronal homeostasis yet rewire their fuel pathways during inflammation. Using functional metabolic mapping with 13C‐tracers and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry we reveal that, beyond glucose and glutamine (gln), microglia also import and metabolize gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA), a previously unrecognized capability.
