Inducible binding of a factor to the c-fos enhancer

Cell, 1986
We have identified a factor in nuclear extracts that binds to the c-fos enhancer. Treatment of A431 cells with epidermal growth factor results in a rapid increase in the level of transcription and a concomitant increase in binding of the factor to the enhancer.

Behavioral assessment of c-fos mutant mice

Brain Research, 1994
Induction of the proto-oncogene c-fos has been associated with a number of neural and behavioral responses to acute stimuli. Behavioral characterization of mice containing a mutant c-fos allele created via homologous recombination-based gene targeting was performed to analyze the role of this protein in baseline neurological properties as well as ...

c-fos regulates neuronal excitability and survival

Nature Genetics, 2002
Excitotoxicity is a process in which glutamate or other excitatory amino acids induce neuronal cell death. Accumulating evidence suggests that excitotoxicity may contribute to human neuronal cell loss caused by acute insults and chronic degeneration in the central nervous system. The immediate early gene (IEG) c-fos encodes a transcription factor.

The circadian system of c-fos deficient mice

Journal of Comparative Physiology A, 1996
We examined the role of c-fos in the synchronization of circadian rhythms to environmental light cycles using a line of gene-targeted mice carrying a null mutation at this locus. Circadian locomotor rhythms in mutants had similar periods as wild-type controls but took significantly longer than controls to entrain to 12:12 light-dark cycles.

Regulation of c-fos is affected by electromagnetic fields

Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 1996
The goal of the present study was to determine if regulatory regions of the c-fos gene were responsive to electromagnetic field exposure. The research design used transfected cells to increase the sensitivity of assays designed to identify changes following exposure.

Roles for NF-κB and c-Fos in osteoclasts

Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, 2005
NF-kappaB and c-Fos are transcription factors that are activated in immune cells and in most other cell types following stimulation by a variety of factors, including cytokines, growth factors, and hormones. They regulate the expression of a large number of genes, and both are activated in osteoclast precursors after RANKL, IL-1, or TNF bind to their ...

c-Fos antagonizes the junD gene positive autoregulatory loop; a novel c-Fos role in promoter switching

Gene, 1998
In contrast to c-jun and junB, the junD gene is constitutively expressed in quiescent cells. The junD promoter, therefore, may provide a paradigm for promoters mostly active in growth arrested cells. We report here that the human junD promoter is repressed by serum and TPA.

Diurnal expression of c-fos in the mouse retina

Molecular Brain Research, 1993
The diurnal levels of c-fos mRNA were studied in the mouse retinas by means of RNA blot analysis. Mice were kept on a 12/12 h dark/light cycle and gene expression was studied at various time points during the day and night periods. The highest levels of c-fos mRNA were measured during the first half of the night period.

Activation of in the brain

Progress in Neurobiology, 1996
Activation of the proto-oncogene c-fos in the brain was described initially almost a decade ago and represents one of the most studied immediate early genes in the brain. Transient c-fos expression in the central nervous system was first observed after seizure activity and following noxious stimulation in the spinal cord.

Expression of the C-Fos Gene During Differentiation

1987
Retroviruses cause tumors in experimental animals via a number of diverse mechanisms. One group of viruses induces transformation by introduction of a viral gene (v-onc) derived from a normal cellular gene (c-onc) (1–3). In general, acquisition of the c-onc gene is accompanied by various alterations, including single base changes and deletions, and ...
