Murine monoclonal antibodies recognizing a non-capsular antigen that distinguishes between Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans and C. neoformans var. gattii

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1991
A panel of 4 monoclonal antibodies (mabs) of the IgG1 subclass have been made against a cytoplasmic antigen of Cryptococcus neoformans. Mab 4E2 recognized isolates of C. neoformans var. gatti by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), whilst the other antibodies did not recognize these antigens. By Western blot 4E2 recognized determinants at 110-125,

Interaction between saquinavir and antimycotic drugs on C. albicans and C. neoformans strains

Pharmacological Research, 2004
Candidiasis and cryptococcosis are the most common fungal diseases among patients suffering from HIV infection. In the present work we assess whether the combined therapies, proteinase inhibitors and antimycotic drugs, could modify the therapeutic effect of antimycotics.

Antibody Isolation in C. neoformans

The importance of humoral immunity to fungal infections remains to be elucidated. In cryptococcosis, patients that fail to generate antibodies against antigens of the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans are more susceptible to the disease, demonstrating the importance of these molecules to the antifungal immune response.

Factors affecting experimental infection with Cryptococcus neoformans in mice with special reference to an endotoxic substance of C. neoformans

Mycopathologia, 1975
A close correlation was observed between body weight and length of the survival time of mice inoculated intravenously (i.v.) with Cryptococcus neoformans (p less than 0.001). An endotoxic substance of C. neoformans (Cr-ET) increased the susceptibility of mice to i.v. infection of C. neoformans only when more than 50 mug of Cr-ET was injected i.v.

Quantification of C. neoformans Capsule Diameter

The polysaccharide capsule of Cryptococcus neoformans is the primary virulence factor and one of the most commonly studied aspects of this pathogenic yeast. Capsule size varies widely between strains, has the ability to grow rapidly when introduced to stressful or low-nutrient conditions, and has been positively correlated with strain virulence.

The Discovery of Creatinine Assimilation in Cryptococcus neoformans, and Subsequent Work on the Characterization of the Two Varieties of C. neoformans

Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, 1991
The discovery of creatinine assimilation in C. neoformans by Staib served as the foundation for our biochemical, genetical, ecological, epidemiological and taxonomic studies on the two varieties of C. neoformans for the past 15 years. The two varietal concept is now widely accepted and the arrival of AIDS epidemic has promoted the recognition of the ...

On the structure of the capsular polysaccharide fromCryptococcus neoformans serotype C

Immunochemistry, 1978
The capsular polysaccharide from Cryptococcus neoformans serotype D has been studied by employing the usual methods for the elucidation of chemical structure. The results are consistent with the occurrence of a polysaccharide having both D-glucosyl-uronic acid and D-xylosyl groups present as nonreducing end-groups attached to O-2 of D-mannosyl residues
