Effects of whole body irradiation in mice treated with C. parvum

Abstract We have investigated the effect of whole body irradiation (WBI) upon the survival of Corynebacterium parvum ( C. parvum )-treated CBA mice. Applied to mice 7 days after C. parvum WBI with 350–950 rad of X-ray killed more C. parvum -treated than -untreated mice.

A 50% infectious dose (ID50) of 132 Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts was previously determined in serologically negative individuals (ELISA). In this study, 17 healthy adults with pre-existing anti-C. parvum serum IgG were challenged with 500-50,000 oocysts. Infection and diarrhea were associated with the higher challenge doses.

A comparison of the antitumour activities of glucans and C. parvum.

After i.v. injection of glucans (yeast cell walls, lentinan and pseudonigeran) into CBA mice, the peritoneal macrophages became cytostatic to R1 leukemia cells in vitro, and the mice showed resistance to lung nodule formation by i.v. injected T3 fibrosarcoma cells. The glucans were less active than C. parvum.

The occurrence of Cryptosporidium parvum and C. muris in wild rodents and insectivores in Spain

Five rodent and two insectivore species were investigated for Cryptosporidium at seven sites in north-eastern Spain. Of the 442 animals studied, 82 Apodemus sylvaticus, 1 A. flavicollis, 5 Mus spretus, 1 Rattus rattus, 8 Clethrionomys glareolus and 13 Crocidura russula were infected with only C. parvum. Eleven A. sylvaticus and 2 C.

The effects of intravenous C. parvum (CP) on the efficacy of fractionated gamma-irradiation in treating a fairly immunogenic fibrosarcoma (FSa) and a weakly immunogenic mammary carcinoma (MDAH-MCa-4) were studied in C3Hf/Bu mice. Tumors were 8 mm in diameter at the start of irradiation.
