Cadmium intake and cadmium in the human kidney
Food Additives & Contaminants, 1984The diet and cigarette smoking are the main sources of cadmium intake in people not occupationally exposed to cadmium. Using data gathered from the literature, it is shown that there is a statistically significant relationship between the average cadmium intake in various countries and the average kidney cadmium concentration in 40-60 year old people ...

Metallothioneins (MTs) are low-molecular-mass cysteine-rich proteins with the ability to bind mono- and divalent metal ions with the electron configuration d ( 10 ) in form of metal-thiolate clusters. MTs are thought, among others, to play a role in the homeostasis of essential Zn(II) and Cu(I) ions.

Determination of iron in cadmium and cadmium telluride
Talanta, 1966A procedure is described for the determination of iron in the 10(-6)-10(-4)% range in cadmium and cadmium telluride. Acetylacetone is used for the separation of iron from cadmium, and the iron is determined spectrophotometrically with bathophenanthroline.

Cadmium‐induced enteropathy: Comparative toxicity of cadmium chloride and cadmium‐thionein
Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, 1977In protecting the body against the noxious effects of dietary cadmium ions, cadmium is bound to metallothionein in the proximal intestine, and subsequently excreted into the lumen with desquamation of the epithelium. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which cadmium in the form of intestinal cadmium-thionein is absorbed from the ...

Abstract This report is a condensation of a major work of the Ecotoxicology Section of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Commission of the European Communities. A comprehensive review of the worldwide pollution by cadmium has been made. The present and future potential for human and animal intoxication by this metal has been critically ...

Cadmium, an environmental trace metal, has been implicated as a possible factor in human hypertension. Although the epidemiological studies on humans exposed to cadmium are biased by certain additional factors, more detailed information is available from animal studies and in vitro experiments.

Cadmium–Cadmium Chloride Solutions
Nature, 1965THE nature of cadmium–cadmium chloride solutions is still the subject of considerable discussion, as also are the other metal–halide mixtures. The redox process between divalent cadmium and the species originating from the dissolution of metallic cadmium implies two electrons1,2, according to the following reaction:

Cadmium is an inessential trace metal which accumulates in human tissues from contamination of food, water or air. The kidney is the critical organ following long-term, low-level absorption either by inhalation or ingestion; accumulation occurring in tubular epithelium in the form of a cadmium-metallothionein complex, giving rise to tubular dysfunction.

Cadmium is an established human and animal carcinogen. Most evidence is available for elevated risk for lung cancer after occupational exposure; however, associations between cadmium exposure and tumors at other locations including kidney, breast, and prostate may be relevant as well.
