Cajal Bodies: The First 100 Years

Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology, 2000
▪ Abstract  Cajal bodies are small nuclear organelles first described nearly 100 years ago by Ramón y Cajal in vertebrate neural tissues. They have since been found in a variety of animal and plant nuclei, suggesting that they are involved in basic cellular processes.

Cajal bodies in insects. II. Molecular composition of cajal bodies in oocytes of house cricket. Relationship between cajal bodies and interchromatin granule clusters

Cell and Tissue Biology, 2007
Cajal bodies (CB) in the oocytes of the house cricket Acheta domesticus are large nuclear organelles of regular spherical form and complex inner structure. They are composed of a fibrillar coilin-containing matrix and a central cavity with a prominent fibrogranular body inside. The latter we identified as the “internal” inter-chromatin granule cluster (

The centennial of the Cajal body

Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, 2003
Exactly 100 years ago, the Spanish neurobiologist Santiago Ramon y Cajal described a new organelle in the nuclei of vertebrate neurons. Now called the Cajal body, this organelle occurs in many cell types in a wide variety of animals and plants. Recent studies indicate that the Cajal body has numerous roles in the assembly and/or modification of the ...

CAJAL BODIES: A Long History of Discovery

Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology, 2005
This review surveys what is known about the structure and function of the subnuclear domains called Cajal bodies (CBs). The major focus is on CBs in mammalian cells but we provide an overview of homologous CB structures in other organisms. We discuss the protein and RNA components of CBs, including factors recently found to associate in a cell cycle ...

Cajal Bodies and Plant RNA Metabolism

Critical Reviews in Plant Sciences, 2012
Intracellular location of components associated with RNA metabolism is a key feature of gene expression regulation, although it is often neglected in favor of more direct factors influencing expression. A number of nuclear and subnuclear compartments exist, each carrying out specific functions.

[Cajal bodies and histone locus bodies: molecular structure and function].

Ontogenez, 2015
The review provides modern classification of evolutionarily conserved coilin-containing nuclear bodies of somatic and germ cells that is based on the characteristic features of their molecular composition and the nature of their functions. The main differences between Cajal bodies and histone locus bodies, which are involved in the biogenesis of small ...
