FLASH is an essential component of Cajal bodies [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2006
Cajal bodies are small nuclear organelles with a number of nuclear functions. Here we show that FLICE-associated huge protein (FLASH), originally described as a component of the apoptosis signaling pathway, is mainly localized in Cajal bodies and is essential for their structure.

Fiber‐type soft bioelectronics for wearable and implantable sensing and therapy

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Fiber‐type soft bioelectronics are emerging as versatile platforms for wearable and implantable health monitoring and therapeutic applications. These bioelectronics use organic and inorganic matrices combined with advanced fillers, which feature high conductivity, electrochemical sensitivity, softness, and biocompatibility.

Resident phenotypically modulated vascular smooth muscle cells in healthy human arteries. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Vascular interstitial cells (VICs) are non-contractile cells with filopodia previously described in healthy blood vessels of rodents and their function remains unknown.

Bottom‐up Strategies for Generating Polymer Protocells That Mimic Cellular Communication

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
This review focuses on polymeric protocells produced using a bottom‐up approach. Polymer‐based assemblies guarantee stability and designability by adjusting the properties of the amphiphilic copolymers used. The review covers protocell architectures, production, and their intra‐ and intercellular communication mechanisms.

Fetal Pain Perception: Legislative Assertions and Developmental Neuroscience

open access: yesAnnals of the Child Neurology Society, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Pain perception is a conscious experience, but neither pain nor consciousness is defined in the developing human fetus. Emergent consciousness may be regarded as a phenomenon that ultimately arises from an essential minimum of functional neuronal connectivity. Proposed U.S.

In vivo analysis of NHPX reveals a novel nucleolar localization pathway involving a transient accumulation in splicing speckles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The NHPX protein is a nucleolar factor that binds directly to a conserved RNA target sequence found in nucleolar box C/D snoRNAs and in U4 snRNA. Using enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (EYFP)– and enhanced cyan fluorescent protein–NHPX fusions, we ...

Thrombin regulates the ability of Schwann cells to support neuritogenesis and to maintain the integrity of the nodes of Ranvier [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Schwann cells (SC) are characterized by a remarkable plasticity that enables them to promptly respond to nerve injury promoting axonal regeneration. In peripheral nerves after damage SC convert to a repair-promoting phenotype activating a sequence of ...

Interactions of U2 Gene Loci and Their Nuclear Transcripts with Cajal (Coiled) Bodies: Evidence for PreU2 within Cajal Bodies [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Biology of the Cell, 2000
The Cajal (coiled) body (CB) is a structure enriched in proteins involved in mRNA, rRNA, and snRNA metabolism. CBs have been shown to interact with specific histone and snRNA gene loci. To examine the potential role of CBs in U2 snRNA metabolism, we used a variety of genomic and oligonucleotide probes to visualize in situ newly synthesized U2 snRNA ...

Twenty years of dynamic occupancy models: a review of applications and look to the future

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Since their introduction over 20 years ago, dynamic occupancy models (DOMs) have become a powerful and flexible framework for estimating species occupancy across space and time while accounting for imperfect detection. As their popularity has increased and extensions have further expanded their capabilities, DOMs have been applied to increasingly ...
