Impact of calcific aortic valve disease on valve mechanics

open access: yesBiomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology, 2021
The aortic valve is a highly dynamic structure characterized by a transvalvular flow that is unsteady, pulsatile, and characterized by episodes of forward and reverse flow patterns. Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) resulting in compromised valve function and increased pressure overload on the ventricle potentially leading to heart failure if ...

Pathobiology of Lp(a) in calcific aortic valve disease

Expert Review of Cardiovascular Therapy, 2017
Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most prevalent heart valve disorder. Gene variant in the LPA gene, which encodes for apolipoprotein(a), has been associated at the genome-wide level with CAVD. The process whereby Lp(a) promotes the development of CAVD is under intensive investigation and recent data have shed important insights into disease ...

Inflammation Is Associated with the Remodeling of Calcific Aortic Valve Disease

Inflammation, 2012
Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most frequent heart valve disorder. Studies indicate that mineralization of the aortic valve may be related to the inflammatory process. However, no clear evidence has been given regarding clinical evolution of aortic stenosis and the inflammatory process within the aortic valve.

Calcific Aortic Valve Disease and Hypertension

Current Hypertension Reviews, 2008
This review addresses the role of hypertension in precipitating Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) and the therapeutic potential of anti-hypertensive interventions to ameliorate CAVD. CAVD was originally considered to be a degenerative disease representing the "wear and tear" of the aortic valves.

Multimodality Imaging of Aortic Valve Calcification and Function in a Murine Model of Calcific Aortic Valve Disease and Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Journal of Nuclear Medicine, 2023
Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is a prevailing disease with increasing occurrence and no known medical therapy. Dcbld2-/- mice have a high prevalence of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), spontaneous aortic valve calcification, and aortic stenosis (AS). 18F-NaF PET/CT can detect the aortic valve calcification process in humans. However, its feasibility

The significance of aortic valve calcification in patients with bicuspid aortic valve disease

The International Journal of Cardiovascular Imaging, 2015
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital heart disease. Our study was to analyze clinical features of BAV and evaluate whether aortic valve calcium score (AVCS) was a reliable marker for aortic stenosis (AS) in patients with BAV. 101 patients with BAV who both underwent echocardiology and cardiac computed tomography (CT) scan in our ...

The aortic valve microenvironment and its role in calcific aortic valve disease

Cardiovascular Pathology, 2011
In calcific aortic valve disease, fibrotic and calcific lesions form focally in the fibrosa layer of the valve leaflets. Layer-specific pathosusceptibility suggests that the fibrosa microenvironment is permissive to pathological development. The cellular microenvironment in the aortic valve is defined by a variety of biomechanical-, biochemical-, and ...

Cartilaginous Metaplasia in Calcific Aortic Valve Disease

American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1990
In a 49-year-old man, symptoms of aortic valve stenosis developed that required surgical intervention with valve replacement. Pathologic examination of the valve showed severe calcific aortic sclerosis and foci of hyaline cartilage. The authors believe that these foci are secondary to cartilaginous transformation of mesenchymal valvular tissue.

Basic Mechanisms of Calcific Aortic Valve Disease

Canadian Journal of Cardiology, 2014
Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most common heart valve disorder. There is no medical treatment to prevent and/or promote the regression of CAVD. Hence, it is of foremost importance to delineate and understand the key basic underlying mechanisms involved in CAVD.

Epidemiology and Genetics of Calcific Aortic Valve Disease

Journal of Investigative Medicine, 2007
Calcific aortic valve disease is a common condition in the elderly and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Although biologically plausible roles in disease pathogenesis have been proposed for both lipoproteins and the renin-angiotensin system, no properly controlled, randomized trials have ...
