Arrhythmogenesis in Timothy Syndrome is associated with defects in Ca2+-dependent inactivation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Timothy Syndrome (TS) is a multisystem disorder caused by two mutations leading to dysfunction of the CaV1.2 channel. Here, Dick et al. uncover a major and mechanistically divergent effect of both mutations on Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent inactivation of ...

Vascular Calcification and Stone Disease: A New Look towards the Mechanism

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease, 2015
Calcium phosphate (CaP) crystals are formed in pathological calcification as well as during stone formation. Although there are several theories as to how these crystals can develop through the combined interactions of biochemical and biophysical factors,

Calcium and Excitation-Contraction Coupling in the Heart

open access: yesCirculation Research, 2017
Cardiac contractility is regulated by changes in intracellular Ca concentration ([Ca2+]i). Normal function requires that [Ca2+]i be sufficiently high in systole and low in diastole.

The Activity of Calcium in Calcium-Calcium Halide Fluxes.

open access: yesISIJ International, 1996
The activities of calcium in the CaOsatd.-Ca-CaX2 fluxes (X: Cl, Br, I) were measured as a function of the calcium composition at 1 473 K by equilibrating these fluxes with a solid zirconium plate. The activities decreased in the order CaCl2, Cal2 and CaBr2 at the same calcium fraction of these fluxes.

Modifications in FLAP's second cytosolic loop influence 5‐LOX interaction, inhibitor binding, and leukotriene formation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LOX) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes (LTs) involved in inflammatory pathophysiology. After cellular stimulation, 5‐LOX translocates to the nucleus, interacting with the 5‐LOX‐activating protein (FLAP) to form LTA4 from arachidonic acid (AA).

Calcium Phosphate Cement Leakage During Balloon Kyphoplasty Causing Incomplete Paraplegia: Case Report and Review of the Literature

open access: yesJournal of Orthopedic and Spine Trauma, 2016
Introduction: Bone cement leakage is the most common, however, it can have potentially disastrous complications during vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty (BK).

Calcium in plants.

open access: yesAnnals of Botany, 2003
Calcium is an essential plant nutrient. It is required for various structural roles in the cell wall and membranes, it is a counter-cation for inorganic and organic anions in the vacuole, and the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) is an obligate ...

The carboxylate “gripper” of the substrate is critical for C‐4 stereo‐inversion by UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase (UGAepi) catalyzes NAD+‐dependent interconversion of UDP‐glucuronic acid (UDP‐GlcA) and UDP‐galacturonic acid (UDP‐GalA) via C4‐oxidation, 4‐keto‐intermediate rotation, and C4‐reduction. Here, Borg et al. examined the role of the substrate's carboxylate group in the enzymic mechanism by analyzing NADH‐dependent reduction

Development and in vitro characterization of humanized antibodies for blocking human TRPM4 channel

open access: yesScientific Reports
Transient receptor potential melastatin 4 (TRPM4) channel, a monovalent cation channel, plays a crucial role in various neurological disorders. We previously showed that TRPM4 activity can be blocked by our antibodies: M4P, which targets rat TRPM4 and ...

Caged calcium in Aplysia pacemaker neurons. Characterization of calcium-activated potassium and nonspecific cation currents. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
We have studied calcium-activated potassium current, IK(Ca), and calcium-activated nonspecific cation current, INS(Ca), in Aplysia bursting pacemaker neurons, using photolysis of a calcium chelator (nitr-5 or nitr-7) to release caged calcium ...
