The Contributions of Calcium Carbide to Industry

The early history of the calcium carbide industry is briefly sketched. The four major contributions to industry are: (1) A source of acetylene gas for domestic and mine illumination; (2) A stimulant to the electrical equipment and electrometallurgical industries; (3) Oxyacetylene welding and cutting; (4) A new synthetic organic chemical industry.

Transforming CaC2 into a modular C2 building block enables the synthesis of α,ω‐bis(vinylthio) monomer and its conversion into crystalline, sequence‐defined sulfur‐decorated polymers. Their dense thioether clustering induces nonconventional luminescence and provides structure–function control in a more‐sustainable polymer platform.
