Anomalous L-Type Calcium Channels of Rat Spinal Motoneurons [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of General Physiology, 1999
Single channel patch-clamp recordings show that embryonic rat spinal motoneurons express anomalous L-type calcium channels, which reopen upon repolarization to resting potentials, displaying both short and long reopenings. The probability of reopening increases with increasing voltage of the preceding depolarization without any apparent correlation ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Scrapie-infected GT1-1 cells show impaired function of voltage-gated N-type calcium channels (Cav 2.2) which is ameliorated by quinacrine treatment

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2004
Prions are transmissible pathogens that cause neurodegenerative diseases, although the mechanisms behind the nervous system dysfunctions are unclear.

L-Type Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels Mediate NMDA-Independent Associative Long-Term Potentiation at Thalamic Input Synapses to the Amygdala

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience, 1999
Long-term potentiation (LTP) in the amygdala is a leading candidate mechanism to explain fear conditioning, a prominent model of emotional memory. LTP occurs in the pathway from the auditory thalamus to the lateral amygdala, and during fear conditioning ...

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Neuronal L-Type Calcium Channels Open Quickly and Are Inhibited Slowly

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience, 2005
Neuronal L-type calcium channels are essential for regulating activity-dependent gene expression, but they are thought to open too slowly to contribute to action potential-dependent calcium entry. A complication of studying native L-type channels is that

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Antischistosomal activity of a calcium channel antagonist on schistosomula and adult Schistosoma mansoni worms

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2013
Current schistosomiasis control strategies are largely based on chemotherapeutic agents and a limited number of drugs are available today. Praziquantel (PZQ) is the only drug currently used in schistosomiasis control programs.
