The Role of Fe(II) Minerals in Carbon Stabilization in Coastal and Estuarine Anoxic Environments

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 40, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides are well‐known for their role in organic carbon (OC) stabilization in terrestrial soils. Coastal and estuarine soils typically act as iron sinks and receive a high input of OC. However, tidal submersion induces anoxic and reducing conditions that favor the microbial reductive dissolution of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides ...

Lithology modulates soil priming effect via resource limitations and bacterial community structure

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 1, Page 176-190, January 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The soil priming effect (PE), triggered by root exudate inputs that stimulates microbial activity and drives significant soil carbon (C) losses in terrestrial ecosystems.

A comparison of ceramic and carbon‐based reductants for vitrification of low‐activity waste

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Glass Science, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Sucrose is the current baseline additive at the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant in Washington to control foaming during waste feed to glass transitions and the redox state of the glass melt. Alternative reductants are being investigated to alleviate strain on effluent treatment from toxic acetonitrile production from ...

Low‐temperature sintering of BaTiO3‐based semiconducting ceramics using sodium vapor

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 1, January 2026.
Powder compacts of BaTiO3 were sintered by heating with vaporized sodium metal at 800°C. Ceramic products were black color and electrically conductive due to reducing sintering atmosphere containing sodium. Positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor property was observed for the ceramics after post‐annealing in oxygen‐containing atmosphere.
