Microsatellite diversity and complexity in the viral genomes of the family Caliciviridae
Microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSR) consist of 1-6 nucleotide motifs of DNA or RNA which are ubiquitously present in tandem repeated sequences across genome in viruses: prokaryotes and eukaryotes. They may be localized to both the coding and non-coding regions. SSRs play an important role in replication, gene regulation, transcription, and

Genome organization in the caliciviridae
Trends in Microbiology, 1995Caliciviruses cause a wide spectrum of important diseases. These viruses have a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome; recently, the complete genome sequences of several caliciviruses have been determined. This review outlines the genome organization and phylogenetic relationships of the animal and candidate human caliciviruses.

Sequencing and molecular modeling identifies candidate members of Caliciviridae family in bats
(Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) Emerging viral diseases represent an ongoing challenge for globalized world and bats constitute an immense, partially explored, reservoir of potentially zoonotic viruses. Caliciviruses are important human and animal pathogens and, as observed for human noroviruses, they may impact on human health on a ...

Publisher Summary Caliciviruses are non-enveloped, isometric particles 30-40 nm in diameter. They contain an RNA genome of positive sense and replicate in the cytoplasm, causing cell lysis. Host cell requirements may be exacting; for example, human calicivirus (HCV) has been grown only in primary human embryonic kidney cell cultures.

Genomic characterization of swine caliciviruses representing a new genus of Caliciviridae
Virus Genes, 2009This study reports the molecular characterization of novel caliciviruses, the St-Valérien-like viruses, which were isolated from pig feces in the province of Quebec, Canada between 2005 and 2007. The genomes of St-Valérien-like viruses contain 6409 nucleotides and include two main open reading frames (ORFs).

Caliciviruses and astroviruses, along with rotavirus, are regarded as important causes of viral gastroenteritis. Surveillance studies using recently developed molecular diagnostic methods have also highlighted the importance of human astroviruses and other underreported pathogens as important causes of pediatric acute gastroenteritis.
