Dissociation of Caloric and Video Head Impulse Tests in Patients With Delayed Endolymphatic Hydrops

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2020
Delayed endolymphatic hydrops (DEH) represents a rare clinical entity characterized by intermittent vertigo attacks mimicking those of Ménière's disease (MD) in a patient with a prior sensorineural hearing loss.

Noninvasive brain oxygen saturation measurement during caloric response in vertigo patients—preliminary report

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology
IntroductionAlthough videonystagmography (VNG) is a useful test for evaluating patients with vestibular symptoms, it may cause undesirable side effects.

Dietary Protein Intake and Peritoneal Protein Losses in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients lose protein in their waste dialysate, potentially increasing their risk for malnutrition. We wished to determine whether there was any association between losses and dietary protein intake (DPI). Methods DPI was assessed from 24‐h dietary recall using Nutrics software.

High-Frequency Vestibular Function Is Vulnerable to Presbyvestibulopathy

open access: yesDiagnostics
Introduction: In 2019, mild vestibular function deficiency in elder populations was defined as presbyvestibulopathy (PVP) by the Classification Committee of the Bárány Society.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Clinical characteristics of patients with dizziness/vertigo showing a dissociation between caloric and video head impulse test results

open access: yesEar, Nose & Throat Journal
Objective To explore the clinical characteristics of patients with dizziness/vertigo who showed a dissociation between the results of the caloric test and video head impulse test (vHIT). Methods A total of 327 patients who complained of dizziness/vertigo

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Clinical and Instrumental Evaluation of Vestibular Function Before and After Cochlear Implantation in Adults

open access: yesAudiology Research
Background/Objectives: Vestibular dysfunction is one of the main complications after cochlear implant (CI) surgery, and there are currently no standardized protocols for vestibular assessment in CI candidates.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Inner ear dysfunction in patients with Behcet’s disease

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology, 2017
Background Behcet’s disease (BD) is a rare immune-mediated small-vessel systemic vasculitis that often presents with mucous membrane ulceration and ocular problems. Alajouanine and colleagues first described inner ear involvement in BD in 1961.
