Calcium oxalate, an organic salt found in a popular ornamental indoor houseplant and numerous foods, is one of the many defensive chemical weapons in nature's armoury. Cells in plants known as idioblasts contain needle-like crystals of the salt, which are known as raphides. When idioblasts break, they eject the raphides like javelins.
