Active Capacitor Voltage Balancing in Single-Phase Flying-Capacitor Multilevel Power Converters

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2012
Two active capacitor voltage balancing schemes are proposed for single-phase (H-bridge) flying-capacitor multilevel converters. They are based on the circuit equations of flying-capacitor converters. Consequently, they can be implemented using straightforward control rules.

A generalized capacitor voltage balancing scheme for flying capacitor multilevel converters

open access: yes2010 Twenty-Fifth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC), 2010
Multilevel power electronic converters are the converter of choice in medium-voltage applications due to their reduced switch voltage stress, better harmonic performance, and lower switching losses. Although it has received little attention, the flying-capacitor multilevel converter has a distinct advantage in terms of its ease of capacitor voltage ...

MMC Capacitor Voltage Decoupling and Balancing Controls

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2015
A Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) control system based on converter energy storage is proposed in this paper for two different control modes: active power and dc voltage. The proposed control system decouples the sub-module (SM) capacitor voltages from the dc bus voltage. One of the practical applications is the management of active redundant SMs. A

Voltage balancing using switched capacitors

Electric Power Systems Research, 1992
Thyristor switched capacitors (TSCs) are a useful means of load balancing and reactive power support. The control of a general load by a binary weighted switched capacitor system is discussed in this paper along with a simple control scheme where the capacitor bank across a line pair is adjusted to control the fundamental voltage magnitude for that ...

A New Nine-Level Voltage Source Inverter with Capacitor Voltage Balancing

IECON 2018 - 44th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2018
In this paper, a new nine-level voltage source inverter for medium-voltage high-power applications is proposed. The proposed topology is a combination of the active nested neutral-point clamped inverter and the flying capacitor inverter. A carrier-based sinusoidal pulse width modulation scheme is developed to balance the voltage of the flying ...
