Capacitor Voltage Balancing of Flying Capacitor Multilevel Converters by Space Vector PWM

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2012
Proper operation of a multilevel flying capacitor converter (FCC) necessitates a closed-loop voltage balancing strategy. This paper proposes a space vector modulation (SVM)-based approach that benefits from the switching state redundancy of an n-level FCC to implicitly carry out the voltage balancing task within the switching strategy.

Capacitor voltage balancing in full binary combination schema flying capacitor multilevel inverters

IEEE Power Electronics Letters, 2003
Recently, the full binary combination schema (FBCS) method has been introduced to control the flying capacitor multilevel inverter. This method has the primary advantage that the number of voltage levels can be increased for a given number of semiconductor devices when compared to the conventional control methods.

Capacitor Voltage Balancing and Stabilization for 4-Level Hybrid-Clamped Converter Using Selected Switching States

IEEE transactions on power electronics, 2019
Without active control, the voltage fluctuations of the dc-link and flying capacitors in a 4-level hybrid-clamped converter (4L-HCC) become excessively large in low-frequency operation.

Active Capacitor Voltage Balancing in Single-Phase Flying-Capacitor Multilevel Power Converters

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2012
Two active capacitor voltage balancing schemes are proposed for single-phase (H-bridge) flying-capacitor multilevel converters. They are based on the circuit equations of flying-capacitor converters. Consequently, they can be implemented using straightforward control rules.

Capacitors voltage balancing modeling in three phase flying capacitor converters with booster

2012 3rd Power Electronics and Drive Systems Technology (PEDSTC), 2012
This paper provides a mathematical model for voltage natural balancing process in three phase capacitor-clamped multicell converters. The analysis leads to state-space model of the converters. State-space representation of converter can be utilized to investigate the start-up and steady states of internal flying capacitors voltages.

A resonant switched-capacitor converter for voltage balancing of series-connected capacitors

2009 International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems (PEDS), 2009
This paper describes a resonant switched-capacitor converter (RSCC) for voltage balancing of several capacitor or battery modules connected in series. This voltage balancing circuit transfers electric charge between the capacitor modules with a soft switching operation, resulting in a reduction of power loss and EMI.

Switched Capacitor MMC Submodule Voltage Balancing with Reduced Number of Voltage Sensors

2020 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2020
This paper presents a submodule (SM) capacitor voltage balancing scheme for the Switched Capacitor Modular Multilevel Converter (SC-MMC), which employs a middle submodule connecting the upper and lower arms and does not require large physical arm inductors.

Capacitor voltage balancing method for modular multilevel converter with flying capacitor submodules

2017 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), 2017
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is most widely acclaimed converter topology for high-voltage, high-power applications. Several multilevel submodules have been proposed to replace the conventional two-level submodules for MMC, allowing the reduction in the foot-print size of the converter for the same number of output voltage levels.

Active capacitor voltage balancing control for three-level flying capacitor boost converter

2018 IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC), 2018
The average-behavior circuit model of three-level flying capacitor boost converter (FCBC) is presented in this paper. The small-signal transfer functions of three-level FCBC are first obtained that are including two control signals as the input signals and including the output voltage and the capacitor voltage as the output signals.
