The density wave in a car-following model
Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 2002Summary: According to the optimal-velocity model, the condition for stable traffic flow is deduced. Nonlinear analysis shows that the density fluctuation in traffic flow itself induces two types of local density waves. A weak fluctuation occurring near the stability state in a wide range of headways forms a soliton determined by the Korteweg-de Vries ...

On the equivalence between continuum and car-following models of traffic flow [PDF]
Recently different formulations of the first-order Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model have been identified in different coordinates and state variables.

A novel nonlinear car-following model
Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 1998The mathematical models used to describe the dynamical behavior of a group of road vehicles traveling in a single lane without overtaking are known as car-following models. These models are widely used in many commercially available microscopic traffic simulation software packages. They attempt to mimic the interactions between individual vehicles that

A Linear Dynamic Model for Driving Behavior in Car Following [PDF]
In this paper a car-following model is formulated as a time-continuous dynamic process, depending on two parameters and two inputs. One of these inputs is the follower’s desired equilibrium spacing, assumed to exist and to be known. Another input is the speed of the lead vehicle. Given the formulation of the model, the contribution of these two inputs

Stability of the car-following model on two lanes
Physical Review E, 2005In the case of two-lane traffic, vehicle drivers always worry about the lane changing actions from neighbor lane. This paper studies the stability of a car-following model on two lanes which incorporates the lateral effects in traffic. The stability condition of the model is obtained by using the linear stability theory.

The automobile is a pervasive feature of modern technological societies despite its accompanying problems of pollution, accidents, and congestion. In the last 25 years a vast amount of literature has been published which we might classify as “traffic science.” This science has attempted to understand through modeling and data gathering the traffic ...

Composite car following models
Transportation Research, 1974Abstract This paper addresses previous proposed car-following models and compares them with empirically collected data obtained through aerial photogrammetric techniques, and considers the possibility of using “composite” models to describe the real world situations. Four models are revisited, namely those associated with Chandler et al.

Further research on car-following models
Transportation Research, 1972A CAR-FOLLOWING MODEL IS PROPOSED IN WHICH THE DRIVER'S SENSITIVITY IN RESPONDING TO CHANGES IN VISUAL STIMULUS IS A FUNCTION OF HIS TIME-HEADWAY. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THIS AND PREVIOUS MODELS IS EXAMINED AND ITS APPLICATION TO A WIDE VARIETY OF SITUATIONS DISCUSSED, ILLUSTRATED PARTICULARLY WITH EXAMPLES FROM DATA COLLECTED BY THE AUTHORS IN THE ...

Elementary Car-Following Models
2012Microscopic models describe traffic flow dynamics in terms of single vehicles. The mathematical formulations include car-following models, the topic of this and the next two chapters, and cellular automata, which are described in Chap. 13. This chapter begins with a discussion of general principles that apply to all microscopic models of traffic flow ...
